FAIRFIELD — An attempted armed robbery was stopped Sunday by the speedy response of a store clerk who shot the would-be bandit in the chest, Fairfield police said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 12:40 p.m. at a smoke shop business on the 2100 block of North Texas Street. When they arrived, they found a person wearing a mask who had been shot in the chest by the store clerk, according to Sgt. Matt Bloesch of the Fairfield Police Department.

The suspect entered the store wearing a mask and allegedly pulled a gun on the clerk, Bloesch said. The clerk pulled his own weapon and shot the suspect. Bloesch said the clerk feared for his life.

Bloesch said the suspect was transported to an area hospital and was listed in critical condition. His name, age and city of residence were not released.

Police later reported in a press release that the suspect was armed with a realistic-looking BB gun. The clerk was in legal possession of his gun and acted in self-defense, police said, and does not face criminal charges in connection with the shooting.

The investigation was ongoing, police said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Fairfield Police Department’s Investigations Bureau at 428-7600, the 24-hour tip line at 428-7345 or Solano CrimeStoppers at 644-7867. Tips may also be sent by text message to 888777; type TipFairfieldPD and then your message.

Should've saved us money and aimed for the head. Good for the clerk, we need more business owners like him who are willing to help in purging the city of all the scum.

Let the store know that, then sneak in there wearing a ski mask and pladtic BB gun to see if he follows your advice.

Being shot in the head does not mean automatic death. My friend was shot in the head 39 years ago. He's paralyzed on one side, but he's still much alive.

Glad to hear a crime victim taking his protection into his own hands! I am glad he was able to protect himself. These low life criminals need to see their activities are not acceptable, and people are no longer going to stand to be victimized. Our state, county, and city has gone too far in catering to the excuse making criminal and we are tired of it!!! I am glad the employee is okay and will go home to his family tonight.

Bringing a toy gun to a real gun fight always end up ugly. Now we're stuck with the hospital bill and the store will probably get sued.

ONLY if everyone had a gun when their "Life" was in Danger? The Crime Rate would be Below 5%.

  • True, Crime Rate Would Go DownMay 15, 2017 - 2:38 am

On the flipside, accidental shootings would go up.

According to the latest governmet statistics gun ownership is at record high levels and accidental shootings at an all time low. This is both raw and per capita and of course the base dates from when those statistics were recorded.

A good citizen with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun? But that *never* happens; just ask Di Fi.

Huh! The store clerk should have applied the standard "Twice to the chest, once to the head." firearms usage drill for effective results...stopping an attacker. Termination of said attacker's life is one of the hazards of bad choices in victim selection...

The sad part here is if the folks that are paid to carry a gun had done the shooting they would be put on paid leave and investigated. We seem to have a few things wrong somewhere.Maybe the police should only show up after all the time. It would save worries about their life and jobs.

Shanna Wieser, more police on the streets 24/7 would prevent a lot of these types of crime including DUI. Traffic abuse would be reduced 50%, while the the unknown number of illegal possessions including guns and controlled substances would be discovered and impounded.

I know all caps is defined as yelling but I just think it is harder to read when it's used. I was taught exclamation points were for emphasis.

Score one for the good guys, and another example for the books that guns do serve thier purpose in good hands.

This ain't over yet. The perp's medical care will cost the taxpayer at least $100,000. Then, once he's out, he and his family will sue the store clerk because "he didn't have to shoot him, and our boy was just trying to turn his life around." The store clerk will have to spend $20,000 on lawyers to defend him. Next time the perp comes into the store, the clerk will just give him what he wants.

There's an uptick in violent crimes being committed in Fairfield in the past few months. Not sure if Prop 47 plays a big part, or if the bad guys know FPD just puts in their 9 to 5. Local shootings will continue, it's now part of the fabric. Bad guys should be looking over their shoulders, but they don't. I hope the new Chief of Police starts flipping tables and throwing chairs at the old establishment. Hire a woman!

If the robber had a real gun, the clerk would be dead! The robber was surprised and did't know what to do. The BB gun was useless in a gun fight.
