LOS ANGELES — Authorities are blaming Southern California’s stormy weather for a gas leak that forced dozens of people out of their homes at a San Fernando Valley mobile home park.
A leak in a 2-inch gas pipe was reported shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday in Mission Hills.
Southern California Gas says a construction crew had uncovered the pipe then protected it with burlap, which got wet in the rain. The weight of the soggy burlap broke the pipe.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey tells City News Service that about 65 people, most of them elderly, were evacuated from some 40 homes. They were shuttled to a community clubhouse.
The gas was shut down about two hours later and residents were allowed back home.
No injuries are reported.
