SAN FRANCISCO — Authorities in San Francisco are searching for an inmate who escaped while being escorted into the jail basement to take out the trash.

The sheriff’s department said 40-year-old Timothy Midgett ran out a Hall of Justice exit door Saturday morning. The deputy who was escorting Midgett chased after him, but was unable to catch him.

Midgett was serving a one-year sentence that started on July 25, 2013.

Information on the type of crime that led to his conviction and sentence was not immediately available.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Midgett also has a warrant for his arrest on narcotics charges from Houston.
