SUNNYVALE — Police say a homicide suspect was holding a BB gun when he was shot and killed by officers trying to serve search and arrest warrants at his home.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Capt. Jeff Hunter said Friday that 53-year-old Glen Griggs was carrying a long BB gun Thursday morning after officers knocked on the front door. Hunter says the officers opened fire on Griggs when he repeatedly ignored their commands to put down what they thought was a rifle.

Griggs was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Hunter says the officers involved in the shooting, detectives Chris Ketchum, Mark Jorgensen, Joel Lockwood and Greg Othon, have been placed on paid leave.

The warrants stem from investigation into the 2013 disappearance and presumed death of Griggs’ housemate, Molly Franquemont. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

The case remains under investigation.
