Details released about CHP Shasta County shooting

REDDING — Authorities have released more information about a shooting involving California Highway Patrol officers and a man police say was a wanted felon who led the officers on a high-speed chase in rural Shasta County.

The trouble started when a CHP officer tried to pull over a pickup truck driven by William Joseph Kinyon, 49, in Cottonwood around 10 a.m. Tuesday, said Shasta County sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Steve Grashoff.

Instead of stopping, Kinyon led the officer on a chase, with gunfire being exchanged between between Kinyon and the officer, Grashoff said Wednesday.

During the pursuit, Kinyon slowed the pickup truck down and two women riding in the vehicle jumped out.

Shortly after the women jumped out, Kinyon also jumped out, and shots were exchanged between him, the first officer and a second CHP officer who had arrived to help out, Grashoff said.

Kinyon was hit by gunfire and was taken to a hospital. His condition was not known.

One of the passengers in the pickup truck, a 24-year-old pregnant woman identified as Michelle Short, was also injured during the chase.

Authorities did not describe her injuries, but The Redding Record-Searchlight said she suffered pellet wounds to her head. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and released.

Shasta County officials, who are investigating the incident, said detectives are reviewing video taken from dash cameras mounted on the CHP vehicles involved and have interviewed a person who witnessed the incident.

Kinyon was wanted on two outstanding felony warrants for drug related charges and a third warrant when he failed to appear in court last month, Grashoff said.

He had previously served time in prison on drug charges and was released from prison in 2011, Grashoff said.

The third person in the pickup truck was not hurt.
