California minimum wage rising to $9 per hour

By July 01, 2014

SACRAMENTO — California’s minimum wage is rising to $9 per hour, providing workers with the first increase since 2008.

Starting Tuesday, the state’s minimum wage will take the first of two scheduled increases. It’s one of several new laws taking effect in July.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB10 into law last fall. It will boost the minimum wage to $10 an hour starting on Jan. 1, 2016.

Democratic Assemblyman Luis Alejo of Salinas, who pushed for the increase, says it will allow “hardworking Californians to provide food, clothes and housing for their families.”

The increase comes amid a national debate about wages. A bill that would have further raised California’s minimum wage failed in the Legislature this year.

Washington has the highest minimum wage of any state, at $9.32 an hour.

Let's see what this brings. My daughter has already been told that her hours are going to be cut back, as well as most of the others she works with. It also looks like the push to order pads will be coming to a restaurant near you. Let's see how we can beat down businesses some more.

Bye-bye fast food. You'll not be getting my business any longer. Bye-bye 20% tip. I've decided to move my new "no tipping" policy up to today. The higher this goes, the more I will save! ;)
