MARTINEZ — A Northern California man was sentenced to death Friday for the shotgun killing of his ex-girlfriend while she was working at a San Francisco Bay-Area bridge toll plaza.
Nathan Burris’ sentencing by Contra Costa County Judge John Kennedy followed a jury’s recommendation for Burris to receive the death penalty after they found the former truck driver guilty of two counts of murder with special circumstances of killing multiple people and lying in wait.
“I made my choice and I live with it,” Burris said Friday. “I’m not going to show any remorse. I’m not going to ask you to spare my life.”
In November, Burris, 49, of Richmond, was convicted for fatally shooting Deborah Ross in a toll booth on the busy Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in August 2009. Burris also was found guilty of shooting and killing Ross’ friend, Ersie “Chuckie” Everette III, a Golden Gate Transit District bus driver who was visiting her.
Burris shot Ross, 51, and Everette, 58, because he thought they had become romantically involved after Ross ended their relationship.
Burris, who represented himself during his double-murder trial last year, repeatedly admitted his guilt to jurors, told the judge on Friday that lethal injection is “meaningless” in California because of all of the legal delays.
“I cannot or will not express remorse or regret – it’s not gonna happen,” Burris said.
Ross’ sister Jane Walker said Burris was a “cold, calculating coward” for killing two defenseless people. Another sibling, Tyrice Ross, agreed, telling Burris he was “not man enough to stand on your own feet.”

Fool, you are. How is an EX-GIRLFRIEND moving on with her life adultery? It sounds like you are a very sick individual. I pray for your soul and I hope the people in your life know how you think because you sound like a dangerous and disturbed person.
