REDWOOD CITY — San Mateo County prosecutors say a sheriff’s deputy has pleaded not guilty to stealing a trumpet and jacket from a musician.
Brandon Hatt entered his plea to one count of felony grand theft in court on Monday.
The Contra Costa Times reports that the 34-year-old Hatt allegedly took the items and walked out of a Millbrae hotel after a night out playing pool with a group, including other deputies, on Dec. 20.
Prosecutors say Hatt, who was off duty, was caught on surveillance footage taking the items believed to be worth about $2,000.
The victim later found his instrument in a driveway, but not his jacket. Prosecutors say they don’t know what prompted the theft or whether alcohol was involved.
Hutt, who is on a paid leave, is out of jail on $10,000 bail. He is due back in court on March 21.
