Cal State student shot by police identified

SAN BERNARDINO — Authorities on Sunday identified the graduate student shot and killed by California State University, San Bernardino police during a fight in an off-campus dorm.

The campus officers went to the University Village dorm on West Northpark Boulevard Saturday evening after receiving reports of a disturbance, said San Bernardino police Sgt. Shauna Gates.

A fight erupted when the officers confronted 38-year-old Bartholomew Williams in a hallway, Gates said. Williams became violent toward the officers, who fired their weapons when they feared for their safety, she said.

Williams was shot in the torso. He was declared dead at the scene.

One officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The San Bernardino Police department is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Students were alerted of the shooting via text message and phone calls, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. The statement to students said the crime scene was secure and there were no outstanding suspects.

The incident occurred hours after the university celebrated December graduation.
