VACAVILLE — Darius Washington poured in 20 points and the Wood High boys basketball team limited visiting River City of West Sacramento to 13 points in the first half in cruising to a 73-48 outbracket victory in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, Friday.
“We played really well on defense, we never let them get to the basket,” Wildcats coach Mark Wudel said. “They were kind of satisfied to shoot from the outside and they didn’t shoot real well.”
Fifteenth-seeded Wood (19-10) led 22-7 after the first quarter and 36-13 at the break, getting 17 points from Cameron Moore and 15 from Davis Wade.
“We controlled the boards, we worked it and got easy shots and got a big lead,” Wudel said. “We controlled it and it stayed that way. I was pleased with the way they played today.”
The win earns Wood a first-round game at top-seeded Sacramento.
When asked what it will take to hang with the Dragons, Wudel said, “Well, we can’t get into a running game with them. We’ve got to control the ball and not have turnovers that lead to layups. If we can do that, we’ll be OK.”
Buhach Colony 78, Vacaville 63: At Atwater, the Bulldogs (12-16) were within one point with a little more than 3 minutes left but didn’t score again as the Thunder closed the game on a 14-0 run.
Buhach’s Stephen Hillyer hit a big 3-pointer with 2:36 left that extended the Thunder’s lead to 69-63. Buhach made nine of 10 free throws in the final 2:01.
Raul Magana led the Bulldogs with 14 points, followed by Dylan Lantini with 12 and Dakota Dixon with 11.
