Week 5 prep football capsules
Armijo (1-3) vs. Rodriguez (1-3)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Rodriguez
Series: Rodriguez leads 5-4
Last meeting: 2010, Rodriguez won 49-0
Last week: Armijo lost to Vanden 28-9; Rodriguez lost to Monterey Trail 51-13
Of note: Two struggling teams square off tonight, though the Indians likely feel better about themselves heading into the regular season finale for both. Armijo refused to go away against Vanden last week and Enrique Garrido-Ramirez returned an interception 97 yards — according to Indians coach Aaron Toliver after rewinding the play numerous times. Garrido-Ramirez was originally credited with a 95-yarder. The change makes it the third-longest return in school and city history. . . . Rodriguez gave up 31 first-quarter points last week to Monterey Trail and has seen its offensive yardage output decrease each week. The inability to throw — 4 completions in 41 attempts for 71 yards and no touchdowns with five interceptions — is crippling. The team that can get some kind of air attack going — Armijo completed just one pass last week, Rodriguez none — will have a decided advantage. . . . Rodriguez has won the last five meetings, including the last two by shutout.
Prediction: Rodriguez 22, Armijo 16
Fairfield (1-3) vs. Oak Ridge (3-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Fairfield High
Series: Oak Ridge leads 1-0
Last meeting: 2010, Oak Ridge won 52-21
Last week: Fairfield defeated Vallejo 42-0; Oak Ridge lost to Del Oro 49-29
Of note: The Falcons are coming off an impressive win over Vallejo, but face a much tougher foe tonight. Oak Ridge fell to Del Oro last week, but QB Jason Samuels threw for 225 yards and three TDs, according to Maxpreps.com. The Trojans outscored their first three opponents 111-29. . . . Fairfield’s Jordon Harris rushed for 159 yards last week after running for a combined 56 the first three weeks. Cedric Taylor added 93 yards, while the Falcons’ defense had its best outing of the season, limiting Vallejo to 131 yards.
Prediction: Oak Ridge 48, Fairfield 14
Vanden (3-1) vs. Vintage (0-4)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Memorial Stadium
Series: Vanden leads 2-1
Last meeting: 2010, Vanden won 62-20
Last week: Vanden defeated Armijo 28-9; Vintage lost to Bethel 37-3
Of note: Vanden brings a consistent attack into tonight’s game, one that has gained between 372 and 400 yards in each of its four outings. The Vikings have scored in 14 of the 16 quarters in which they’ve played, while Vintage has yet to score in the first three quarters, according to Maxpreps.com, managing all 26 of its points in the fourth quarter. . . . Vanden QB Ben Scott now has 928 yards on the season and 5,278 for his career, 341 shy of all-time city leader Tra’Mayne Bondurant, who had 5,619 for Fairfield from 2008-2010. Scott also needs 72 yards to join Bondurant as the only quarterbacks with three 1,000-yard passing seasons in city history.
If you go: Take Highway 12 west into Napa, where it merges with Highway 29. Follow Highway 29 north to Lincoln Avenue. Turn right on Lincoln and take an immediate left on California Boulevard. Turn right on Myrtle Avenue, which will take you into the Memorial Stadium parking lot.
Prediction: Vanden 34, Vintage 7
Vacaville (3-1) vs. Deer Valley (2-2)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Zunino Stadium, Vacaville
Series: Vacaville leads 1-0
Last meeting: 2010, Vacaville won 47-26
Last week: Vacaville defeated Valley Christian 41-27; Deer Valley defeated College Park 54-28
Of note: The Bulldogs pulled off their second straight win over a quality opponent. Things don’t get any easier tonight for homecoming as Deer Valley, led by former Vanden coach Rich Woods, has been an offensive juggernaut, having defending state bowl champ Folsom on the ropes before falling 49-46 earlier this year. . . . RB Melvin Mason had his second 200-yard game of the season with 212 yards last week and rambled for 5 TDs, according to Maxpreps.com. Curtis Goins contributed his third straight 100-yard game with 149. Vacaville’s defense turned in its best outing last week, holding Valley Christian to 243 yards — 44 fewer than Deer Valley’s Matt Smith ran for against College Park.
Prediction: Vacaville 49, Deer Valley 45
Wood (1-3) vs. Vallejo (1-3)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Corbus Field
Series: Vallejo leads 14-5
Last meeting: 2010, Wood won 38-13
Last week: Wood lost to Benicia 28-20; Vallejo lost to Fairfield 42-0
Of note: The Wildcats have never won two straight over the Apaches, but that should change tonight. RB Ryan Spinelli returned after sitting out a week to get his third 100-yard game of the season with 117 against Benicia, according to Maxpreps.com. QB Trevor Rosser had his best outing, completing 12 of 17 passes for 133 yards. . . . Wood’s defense has yet to give up fewer than 343 yards, though that could change tonight as Vallejo managed just 131 against Fairfield.
If you go: Take Interstate 80 west to Vallejo and exit at Redwood Street. Go west on Redwood to Tuolumne Street and turn left. Go south on Tuolumne to Nebraska Street and turn right. Look for Vallejo High and Corbus Field on the right.
Prediction: Wood 38, Vallejo 6
Vacaville Christian (3-1) vs. Brookside Christian (0-4)
When: Today, 7 p.m.
Where: Lincoln High, Stockton
Series: Brookside Christian leads 3-2
Last meeting: 2010, Brookside Christian won 76-28
Last week: Vacaville Christian lost to Golden Sierra 17-6; Brookside Christian lost to Middletown 41-8
Of note: The Falcons make their second straight lengthy road trip, this time to Stockton. Their offense didn’t get on the bus last week, though tonight VCS goes up against a team that’s been outscored 239-56.
If you go: Take Highway 12 east and Interstate 5 south to Stockton. Take the Benjamin Holt Drive exit and go east to Alexandria Place. Turn left and find the school at 6844 Alexandria Place.
Prediction: Vacaville Christian 32, Brookside Christian 8
Rio Vista (4-1) vs. Encina Prep (0-3)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Rio Vista
Last meeting: 2010, Rio Vista won 32-14
Last week: Rio Vista lost to Bradshaw Christian 42-14; Encina Prep lost to Highlands 63-0
Of note: The Rams returned to earth with last week’s loss to Bradshaw Christian, but should make it back to the stratosphere tonight when they host a team that’s been outscored 152-8 thus far. Rio Vista RB Javis Blalock had his fifth straight 100-yard outing last week with 161, according to Maxpreps.com, and has an area-best 873 yards on the season.
Prediction: Rio Vista 58, Encina 0
Last week’s prediction record: 6-1; Season record: 25-4
