Week 3 prep football preview capsules
Fairfield (0-2) vs. Rodriguez (0-2)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m. Where: Rodriguez
Series: Fairfield leads 5-4
Last meeting: 2010, Fairfield won 40-32
Last week: Fairfield lost to Pleasant Grove 63-8; Rodriguez lost to Las Lomas 28-14.
Of note: It’s hard to place too much importance on a Week 3 game, but tonight’s loser will likely miss the playoffs. The Falcons are coming off one of their biggest setbacks ever, while the Mustangs are still reeling after last week’s loss to Las Lomas that was split over two days because of lightning. . . . Fairfield’s won the last two meetings after Rodriguez had taken the previous four. . . . The Mustangs look to get more out of their passing game as they’ve completed two passes to their own receivers, three to defenders.
Prediction: Rodriguez 33, Fairfield 24
Armijo (1-1) vs. Benicia (1-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m. Where: Benicia
Series: Benicia leads 20-14-5
Last meeting: 2010, Benicia won 47-7
Last week: Armijo defeated Valley 29-13; Benicia defeated Maria Carillo 35-21
Of note: The Indians broke their school-record 17-game losing streak to give Aaron Toliver his first varsity coaching victory last week, but they take a giant step up in competition this week. Benicia QB Ryan Bohnet’s thrown for 370 yards and three TDs the first two weeks, according to Maxpreps.com . . . . The teams have alternated back to back wins against the other since 2003 with Benicia having taken the last two.
If you go: Take Interstate 680 south to Interstate 780, then go west on I-780 to Military Road. Exit at Military and turn left under the freeway. Look for the school on the left at 1101 Military Way.
Prediction: Benicia 42, Armijo 12
Vacaville (1-1) vs. Granite Bay (3-0)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m. Where: Vacaville High
Series: Tied 3-3-1
Last meeting: 2010, Vacaville won 43-28
Last week: Vacaville lost to Marin Catholic 33-29; Granite Bay defeated Clovis East 42-3
Of note: Putting up big stats didn’t translate to a victory last week for the Bulldogs. They rushed for 576 yards, according to Maxpreps.com, fourth-highest in school history, but still came up short against Marin Catholic. The yards figure to be tougher to come by this week against Granite Bay, which is ranked 17th in the state and sixth in Division I North, according to Calhisports.com.
Prediction: Vacaville 31, Granite Bay 28
Wood (0-2) vs. Davis (2-0)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m. Where: Davis High
Series: Davis leads 5-4
Last meeting: 2010, Wood won 43-20
Last week: Wood lost to Vanden 29-21; Davis defeated Sacramento 28-12
Of note: The teams have opposite records, though Wood has played much stiffer competition. Look for the Wildcats to put one in the win column tonight. . . . The teams have alternated wins each of the last four years.
If you go: Take Interstate 80 east to Highway 113. Take Highway 113 north and exit at Covell Boulevard. Go east on Covell. The school is at the intersection of Covell and Oak Avenue, while it’s street address is 315 W. 14th St.
Prediction: Wood 24, Davis 20
Rio Vista (3-0) vs. Brookside Christian (0-2)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m. Where: Rio Vista High
Last meeting: 2007, Rio Vista won 57-0
Last week: Rio Vista defeated Esparto 38-14; Brookside Christian lost to Placer of Auburn 70-8
Of note: This one’s tough to call as Brookside Christian is consistently inconsistent. Last year the Knights were unbeaten before falling 40-14 to Bishop’s of La Jolla in the CIF Division IV state championship bowl game. This year they’ve been absolutely crushed their first two games, though they’ve played quality opponents. The last decade has seen similar ups and downs. The Rams, No. 5 in the Calhisports.com Division IV North rankings, have their best team in years but may be facing their toughest opponent to date. Or maybe not.
Prediction: Rio Vista 44, Brookside Christian 40
Vanden (2-0) vs. Highland (3-0)
When: Saturday, 2 p.m. Where: Kibbe Dome, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho
Series: First meeting
Last week: Vanden defeated Wood 29-21; Highland defeated Woods Cross (Utah) 30-28
Where to watch: http://idahosports.com/gamestreams/
Of note: Vanden coach LeVon Haynes said the Rams reminded him of his Vikings after watching film of them. Both teams have solid quarterbacks — Vanden’s Ben Scott moved up to No. 2 on the all-time city passing list past Fairfield’s Keith Welch Jr. as his 272 yards against Wood give him 4,877 for his career — while Highland’s Neil Jewell already had a 300-yard game to his credit this season. The schools are similar in size — Vanden has approximately 1,600 students, Highland 1,300 — and they opened one year apart — the former in 1964, the latter in 1963.
If you go: See your travel agent.
Prediction: Vanden 32, Highland 27
Last week’s prediction record: 7-0; Season record: 14-2
Solano County rankings: 1, Vacaville (1-1). 2, Vanden (2-0). 3, St. Patrick’s (1-0). 4, Bethel (2-1). 5, Benicia (1-1). 6, Vallejo (1-1). 7, Wood (0-2). 8, Rodriguez (0-2). 9, Fairfield (0-2). 10, Rio Vista (3-0). 11, Vacaville Christian (3-0). 12, Armijo (1-1). 13, Dixon (0-2).
