Vanden rolls to 48-12 win against Christian Brothers

FAIRFIELD —Rain, wind and temperatures in the 40s weren’t the only things that left Ben Scott and the Vanden High Vikings cold at the conclusion of last year’s season-ending playoff loss to Casa Roble High in Roseville.

After breaking the school record for passing yards in a career in Friday night’s season opening 48-12 victory against visiting Christian Brothers High, Scott had one thing on his mind.

“I want to win a section championship,” Scott said. “The last two years, we’ve got stuck in the second round of the playoffs.”

If that’s the goal, Scott and company did everything they could to take a step closer against the visiting Falcons. Scott threw for 255 yards and five touchdowns in addition to running for 57 more.

Vikings head coach LeVon Haynes was excited for his player.

“He’s a third-year guy and you expect him to be in that kind of form,” Haynes said. “He had a good ball game.”

Three of Scott’s TD passes were to junior wideout Christian Basden, who made two more catches for a total of 37 yards.

The first of Basden’s trips to pay dirt came on the first drive of the season, a seven-play effort that chewed nearly 3 minutes from the clock. After David Bucannon’s one-handed grab picked up 30 yards to set up first-and-goal, Basden hauled in a 5-yard toss from Scott to give Vanden a 7-0 lead. His final score was from 3 yards out.

To go up 14-0, Scott rolled right from 2 yards out and hit a wide open Basden.

Basden was wide open again on his third and final score, which capped the first drive of the third quarter. The defender covering the junior wide receiver slipped near the goal line. The catch gave Vanden a 34-6 lead.

Basden wasn’t Scott’s only target. Ren Littlepage, a sophomore running back, scored a pair of touchdowns.

The first, a throwing TD, came on a third-and-5. Scott rolled to his right, evaded a tackle and hit a tiny window for Littlepage to catch the ball. For his part, Littlepage dashed up his own sideline before good blocking allowed him to cut back across the field for a 53-yard touchdown.

The second came on the Vikings final scoring drive, as Littlepage capped a 12-play drive with an 8-yard score with 4:25 to go in the fourth.

It was Bucannon who lead all receivers with 89 yards on five catches, however. He also scored a touchdown, stepping right in front of a Christian Brothers receiver, intercepting the Falcons’ Ryan Peabody and running it back for a 35-yard touchdown.

Peabody, a senior, left the game in the second quarter following a run at midfield on which he injured his medial collateral ligament in his right leg. Vanden coach LeVon Haynes said it’s possible Peabody may be done for the season.

The Falcons struggled offensively with both Peabody and Caden Noon under center, amassing 92 yards total offense to Vanden’s 400.
