BENICIA — The Vanden High girls basketball team rolled to victory in its Solano County Athletic Conference opener, Thursday night, with a 61-31 victory over host Benicia.
Kayla Blair led a balanced attack with 10 points for the Vikings (12-3, 1-0 SCAC), while Aleseana Whitney, Brittany Kirbyson and Chantell Greer each put in nine. Julia Blackshell-Fair added seven.
Vanden jumped to a 14-5 lead after eight minutes and led 27-14 at the half. The Vikings’ defense held the Panthers to single digits in all but a 10-point third quarter.
Vanden faces McClatchy of Sacramento at St. Mary’s of Stockton at 5 p.m, Saturday.
On Monday, the Vikings return to St. Mary’s to take on Vista Murrieta at 11 a.m., before returning to SCAC action at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday night, for a home engagement with Vallejo.
In junior varsity action, the Vikings routed the Panthers 42-28. Brooklin Crawford led Vanden (11-4, 1-0 SCAC ) with 13 points, while Aryel Moreland and Macie Saunders added eight each.
Vallejo 33, Fairfield 28: At Vallejo, the Falcons (2-15) took a 22-19 lead into the fourth quarter but had three players foul out in dropping their SCAC opener.
Lia Williams led Fairfield with eight points, while Rayonna Allen scored seven, RaShanae Johnson six and Ebony Hughes four.
The fourth quarter “was the deciding factor,” Fairfield coach Michael Gilliard said. “We had three people foul out. They were our top three scorers.”
The Falcons host American Canyon, Tuesday.
