Vanden cruises to win over American Canyon
FAIRFIELD — Sometimes the ball just bounces your way.
Such was the case Friday night as the Vanden High football team capitalized on American Canyon’s mistakes to earn a 38-21 Solano County Athletic Conference win at George A. Gammon Field.
The Vikings (5-2, 1-1 SCAC) recovered two Wolves fumbles and an onside kick to key the victory.
“It was a good win,” Vanden coach LeVon Haynes said. “It was a magical night. There were a lot of alumni here and Carter Campbell spoke to the team (Thursday) to give us a little inspiration.”
On the opening drive, the Vikings defense looked to be a little too excited, jumping offside twice and allowing the Wolves to drive 86 yards for a touchdown. Wolves quarterback Michael Rapacon ran in a 24-yard option for the score.
After a failed onside attempt by American Canyon gave Vanden excellent field position at the 50, Vanden QB Ben Scott went to work.
Scott connected with J.J. Hong on the Vikings first play from scrimmage for 30 yards. After an OShea Bryant 11-yard run, Scott and Hong connected again, this time from 14 yards out to put the Vikings on the board. After the extra point, both teams were even at 7.
Vanden’s defense soon settled down and held the American Canyon offense in check, forcing a punt.
Scott again started the next drive with a 40-yard pass to Cody Holbein, however, this time the drive would stall on the 5-yard line and Vanden was forced to settle for a field goal.
After the kickoff, the Vikings came up huge recovering a fumble and giving Scott the ball back on the Wolves’ 20. Six plays later, Scott snuck in from a yard out to give the Vikings a 17-7 lead after the extra point.
American Canyon struck back quickly with a 73-yard drive, which culminated with a Jomon Dotson 1-yard dive.
The Vikings answered by doing something a little different — they stuck to the ground game.
Vanden ran the ball six straight times with Hong and Bryant getting the carries. Scott capped off the drive with a 6-yard TD run.
Scott wasn’t done. After an American Canyon fumble, Scott completed a 28-yard pass to Holbein who hauled the pass in one-handed for the touchdown. Scott also threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to David Buchannon.
“The win puts us back on track for the playoffs,” Haynes said. “We just need to be more disciplined.”
Vanden travels to Vallejo on Saturday to take on Vallejo.
