Vanden boys withstand late Wood surge for victory

FAIRFIELD — The Vanden High boys basketball team held for a wild 51-49 victory over visiting Will C. Wood Friday night at Jim Boyd Gym.

The Vikings (8-7) jumped to a 32-17 lead and made it hold up despite being outscored 32-19 over the final 16 minutes.

Wood nearly pulled it off with a 16-9 fourth quarter.

Jihad Woods led Vanden with a double-double, scoring 14 and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Thomas Avent added 13 points and six assists for the Vikings.

Wood’s leader was Darius Washington with 14 points, followed by Will Sanders with 12 and Cameron Moore with 10.

Vanden travels to Stockton, Saturday, for a 5 p.m. matchup with Stagg.

Wood JV 42, Vanden 41: At Vanden, the Vikings couldn’t quite hang on in a close loss at home.

Anthony Anchante led the Vikings (2-11) with 22 points and Jordan Williams added six.

Vanden is at Stagg of Stockton at 3:30 p.m., Saturday.
