SACRAMENTO — The Vanden High boys basketball team put up a fight, but ultimately fell 68-61 to Grant of Sacramento at the Adidas Invitational at Sheldon High.

The Vikings (10-10, 2-1 SCAC) trailed 37-27 at the break, but rallied to tie the game at 47-47.

“They have a kid who is ranked in the top five in Northern California – we held him in check for a while, but he got three dunks in a row on us after we tied it,” said Vanden coach Michael Holloway.

Again the Vikings rallied and got within one at 58-57.

“But we just couldn’t get over the hump,” Holloway said. “I was really impressed with the way the kids responded. Our kids did a really great job.”

Thomas Avent led Vanden with 16 points and Rashad Fisher added 12.

Jansen Smith came just shy of a triple-double with 10 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks.

Vanden returns to Solano County Athletic Conference action Tuesday when it hosts American Canyon.
