ROCHESTER, Minn. — First in third.

The Vacaville High wrestling team took home a first-place finish in the third bracket of The Clash National Tournament, mowing down the competition as the Bulldogs finished 3-0, Saturday.

In the three rounds of the day, the easiest for the Bulldogs was – coincidentally – the final round, as they amassed a 46-24 win over Timberland of Missouri.

Vacaville lost the first three matches of the round, falling behind 15-0.

After that, the Bulldogs won seven straight matches, making the score 37-15.

The run was started by a Steven Gomez (195 pounds) fall in 18 seconds. Jeramy Sweaney (220) won a 12-4 major decision, while Mike McCauley (285) won by fall in 5:24. Jordan Aquino won by fall in 48 seconds and Alex Meyers (113) got a 6-0 decision.

Gionn Peralta (120), Anthony Hernandez (126), Eric Uldall (138), and Hayden Fry (152) also contributed to the victory.

The Bulldogs’ tightest contest of the day was against St. Michael-Albertville of Minnesota with the Orange and Black winning the match by a narrow 30-29 margin.

Vacaville fell behind 15-6 early in the round, but came back to take an 18-15 lead thanks to a Sweaney fall (1:10) and decisions from McCauley (3-2) and Aquino (9-3).

The Bulldogs lost the lead once more, but once Peralta won by fall in 52 seconds, Vacaville had the lead for good.

Hernandez and Bobby Ehman (138) had the other two victories in the round.

St. Michael-Albertville went on to take second place in the bracket.

The Bulldogs’ Round 1 victory was a 35-28 decision against Prior Lake of Minnesota.

Cole Tigert (170), Fry, Sweaney, Aquino, Peralta, Hernandez, Ehman and Uldall all had victories in the round.
