Vacaville Christian falls to rival Bradshaw in SJS Division VI title game

LODI — You can’t pick your foes in the playoffs, and unfortunately for the Vacaville Christian High baseball team, the opposition in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI title game was Sierra Delta League rival Bradshaw Christian of Sacramento.

The Pride had trailed on just three occasions in beating the Falcons eight straight times since 2011, according to maxpreps.com, and made it nine in a row with a 5-1 victory at Tony Zupo Field, Monday.

After four scoreless innings, Vacaville Christian (21-9-1) took a 1-0 lead when Josh Gardner singled in Jeremy Wager-Smith with two outs in the top of the fifth.

As with the other time the Falcons led the Pride this season, the advantage didn’t last the bottom of the inning as Grant Dragmire, the eventual winning pitcher, blasted a leadoff home run off VCS starter Tyler Brassfield in the home half of the fifth to tie the score.

Brassfield later walked a batter and was removed, but it led to the go-ahead run and Bradshaw Christian tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to ice the victory.

“That’s best we’ve played against them the last few years,” Falcons coach Steve Brassfield said. “Some defensive errors is really what cost us.”

Also getting hits for VCS were Wager-Smith, Kris Petnicki and Tyler Brassfield, the latter getting a double in the sixth.

With just four seniors – only three of whom start – on their 16-player roster, the Falcons are primed to make another run at the title in 2015.

“A lot of teams we played (in the playoffs) had 8-10 seniors (on) their rosters,” Steve Brassfield said. “I’m happy, I’m pleased with the way we played and competed. l look forward to getting back to the divisional championship (game) and winning it. We got a taste of it, we liked it and fell a little bit short. I’d like to start practice tomorrow. but we won’t. The kids will finish with finals the next few days.”
