VACAVILLE — The Bulldogs are looking for a four-peat.
The Vacaville High wrestling team is in action Saturday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Dual Championships, a format that pits champions from eight leagues head-to-head.
Action at Lincoln High in Stockton gets underway at 9 a.m., with the semifinals set for 12:30 p.m. and the finals at 4 p.m.
The Bulldogs, champions of the Monticello Empire League, have dominated this format since its inception in 1986, winning 18 times – including 13 of the last 15 – and finishing runner-up seven other times. They won seven straight section dual titles from 1998-2004.
Vacaville, currently ranked No. 3 overall in the state by thecaliforniawrestler.com and No. 1 in the SJS, cruised through the MEL this season, outscoring its opponents 314-41 in five dual matches. Its only three dual losses this season came at the hands of No. 1-ranked Clovis and two teams from out of state at The Clash National Duals in Minnesota.
Teams that stand in the Bulldogs’ way for this year’s dual championship include Folsom High, which returns seven starters from a year ago and is currently ranked No. 4 in the section, Elk Grove, No. 3 in the SJS, along with newcomers to Division I, Del Oro of the Sierra Foothill League, which won the SJS Division II duals title a season ago.
Should Vacaville be victorious, senior Kasey Klaus would become a four-time section duals champion with the Bulldogs.
