FAIRFIELD — The 2013 high school football season – and the season for nearly every other fall sport – kicks off this week.
Nearly every area grid team is in action on Friday with two powerhouses squaring off when Vacaville plays Valley Christian of San Jose at Zunino Stadium. In other home games, Armijo entertains American Canyon, while Vanden hosts Dixon and East Nicolaus travels to Rio Vista.
Road games have Fairfield at Del Campo of Fair Oaks, Rodriguez at Deer Valley of Antioch and Wood at Pioneer of Woodland.
Earlier in the week, several area volleyball teams will take part in Sac-Joaquin Section Foundation Games on Tuesday.
The games include American Canyon at Armijo, Vacaville Christian at Bethel, Vacaville vs. Buckingham Charter at Vaca Peña Middle School, Vanden at Wood and Rio Vista at Woodland Poly.
There are several rivalry games in boys soccer, with Armijo at Vanden on Monday, Armijo at Fairfield and Vanden at Rodriguez on Wednesday, and Rio Vista at Delta of Clarksburg on Thursday.
Rivals also square off in water polo when Fairfield hosts Armijo on Thursday.
The highlight of the week in cross country is the annual Lagoon Valley Classic, with Armijo, Fairfield, Rodriguez, Wood and Vacaville among the participants.
The Solano County Athletic Conference and Monticello Empire League square off in girls tennis when Vanden travels to Vacaville on Wednesday.
That same day, the girls golf teams from the same two schools meet at Green Tree, with league play beginning in tennis for the SCAC and golf in both leagues on Thursday.
In JC action, the Solano Community College women’s soccer team is at Evergreen Valley College of San Jose on Friday, while the Falcons volleyball team hosts Sacramento City, Sierra and Napa Valley in the annual Solano Classic, also on Friday.
