FAIRFIELD — The start of league play in basketball and the latest edition of one of the area’s oldest wrestling tournaments highlight this week’s high school and junior college sports action.

The Solano County Athletic Conference opens play on Thursday with the top matchup featuring Fairfield (13-3) hosting Vallejo (8-7), the only other team in the SCAC with a winning record at this point of the season.

The Monticello Empire League gets going on Friday with the Armijo girls (5-10) looking to extend their 30-game MEL winning streak at Vacaville (8-5). Another key clash has Rodriguez (14-1) entertaining the team with the second-best overall record in the league, Napa (10-6).

The next day Armijo holds the 43rd edition of the Armijo Invitational at E. Gary Vaughn Gymnasium, with most area teams participating.

Here’s a look at the rest of the week:

The Solano Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams make the trip to Kentfield to play at College of Marin.

The Armijo girls get in one last nonleague game when they host Benicia.

Before holding their invitational, Armijo entertains national power Vacaville. Other wrestling dual matches have Napa at Rodriguez, American Canyon at Vanden and Bethel at Fairfield.

The Solano teams return home to play Merritt College of Oakland.

SCAC basketball openers feature Vallejo at Fairfield and Benicia at Vanden on the boys side, while the girls games have Fairfield at Vallejo and Vanden at Benicia.

The MEL basketball season tips off with Vacaville at Armijo and Napa at Rodriguez in boys action, while the girls have Armijo at Vacaville and Rodriguez at Napa.

The Vanden boys and girls basketball teams take part in Martin Luther King tribute tournaments, the former at Hercules, the latter at St. Mary’s of Stockton against McClatchy of Sacramento.
