SHINGLE SPRINGS — The Rodriguez High wrestling team put up a strong fight Wednesday night but the Mustangs came up short in a 37-30 loss to powerhouse Ponderosa High.
The Mustangs trailed just 34-30 heading into the heavyweight match, with a pin or a technical fall giving Rodriguez a win. But heavyweight Patrick Ferrer allowed an escape and fell 1-0.
“It was 0-0 going into the third (period) and we chose top to go for the fall,” Rodriguez coach Mike Clarkston said. “But the guy escaped.”
Andrew Sta Maria, at 113 pounds, Brandon Vu (120), Malachi Estep (145), Henry Medeiros (195) and Anthony Ishaq (220) all recorded pins for the Mustangs to get them their 30 points.
Rodriguez is back in action this weekend at the Bear Creek tournament.
