SHINGLE SPRINGS — The Rodriguez High wrestling team put up a strong fight Wednesday night but the Mustangs came up short in a 37-30 loss to powerhouse Ponderosa High.

The Mustangs trailed just 34-30 heading into the heavyweight match, with a pin or a technical fall giving Rodriguez a win. But heavyweight Patrick Ferrer allowed an escape and fell 1-0.

“It was 0-0 going into the third (period) and we chose top to go for the fall,” Rodriguez coach Mike Clarkston said. “But the guy escaped.”

Andrew Sta Maria, at 113 pounds, Brandon Vu (120), Malachi Estep (145), Henry Medeiros (195) and Anthony Ishaq (220) all recorded pins for the Mustangs to get them their 30 points.

Rodriguez is back in action this weekend at the Bear Creek tournament.

Armijo’s Simpson wins ‘Athleadership Grant’

FAIRFIELD — Armijo High’s Damian Simpson has won a National Athleadership Grant sponsored by NCSA Athletic Recruiting and the NFLPA, according to an email from the National Collegiate Scouting Association.

Receiving this award is an honor, one that is only given to a select number of student athletes throughout the country in all sports from football to track, the email said.

As a result of Simpson’s selection as the recipient of this Athleadership Grant, the email said, NCSA Athletic Recruiting will work with him and his family in the final stages of his high school career and assist him in finding a collegiate institution that best matches his academic and athletic achievements.

The email didn’t include the amount of the grant.
