Rodriguez boys earn soccer playoff berth

FAIRFIELD — On to the playoffs.

The Rodriguez High boys soccer team achieved its season goal on the last day of the regular season Wednesday, earning a scoreless tie with host Vanden and getting some help from Solano County Athletic Conference champion Vallejo.

Entering the final day, the Mustangs (7-5-8, 5-3-7 SCAC) were tied with Bethel for third place with 21 points each in the SCAC standings.

Vallejo topped Bethel 2-1 Wednesday to help Rodriguez claim the SCAC’s final Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

“Defensively, we played really well, but earning that playoff spot is pretty cool,” said Mustangs coach Dale Daniel.

Rodriguez will be on the road when the playoffs begin next Thursday.

In junior varsity action Wednesday, the Vikings shut out the Mustangs (4-12-1, 3-11-1 SCAC) 7-0.

Armijo 1, Fairfield 0: At Fairfield, the Falcons gave the Indians all they could handle on Senior Night at Brownlee Field, but ultimately, Armijo (15-0-2, 13-0-2 MEL) finished the regular season with its unbeaten record intact.

After a scoreless first half, Armijo’s Victor Calderon was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick, which teammate Victor Pacheco converted in the 64th minute.

“We got a heck of a game from Fairfield,” said Armijo coach Brad Burzynski. “My hat is off to them.”

Burzynski said the Falcons (1-13-2 MEL) got several solid looks, but goalkeeper Brandon Brimer was at the top of his game, earning seven saves.

Falcons coach Jose Alvarado was pleased with his team’s end-of-season effort, going back to a Monday victory over Vacaville.

Fairfield’s Michael Gutierrez managed five shots on goal, and Sesario Garcia had a strong game on defense, Alvarado said.

“All 17 of my players had good game,” Alvarado said. “We managed to hold Armijo’s midfield. I want to congratulate Armijo’s coach and players for winning the title, and wish them luck in the playoffs as they represent the league.”

Encina Prep 3, Vacaville Christian 1: At Vacaville, the Falcons fell Wednesday and will have to settle for second place in the Sierra Delta League.

Vacaville Christian (12-3-2, 10-1-1 SDL) still earn a playoff bid and will face the No. 2 finisher from the Central Valley Christian League, either Forest Lake Christian or Cristo Rey next Thursday in Vacaville.

Brock Gustafson scored the lone goal for VCS Wednesday.
