Vanden takes down No. 3 River Valley in volleyball playoffs
YUBA CITY — The Vanden High volleyball team pulled off an upset in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs Tuesday night, edging host and No. 3 seed River Valley in four sets, 27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18.
The No. 6 Vikings nearly did it in three sets, trailing 18-2 in the third before rallying to make it a close one.
Kamra Jackson was 16 for 16 serving with an ace, seven kills, four blocks and four digs.
Meghan Herout served 13 for 14 with two aces, four kills, a block, four digs and 16 assists.
Rochelle Roberts was a perfect 11 for 11 serving with two aces, eight kills, six digs and 16 assists.
Yolanda Gillotte was
12 for 12 at the line with two kills, and she dominated the net with
10 blocks.
Jewels Putman didn’t miss, serving 14 for 14 with an ace, 15 kills and five digs.
The girls were just working like a machine,” said coach Cindy Scolavino.
Vanden will next face the winner of Tuesday’s Placer-Sacramento High match on Thursday.
Mustangs top Monterey Trail on road
ELK GROVE — The Rodriguez High volleyball team came up big on the road, defeating host Monterey Trail in the SJS Division I playoff opener Tuesday, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
Freshman setter Jade Horder had 30 assists for the No. 8 Mustangs (22-7).
Tori Bruce had 14 kills and Megan Bohorquez added 10 kills, while Claudia Diaz had eight kills.
Rodriguez now gets to take on top-seeded St. Francis on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday.
“We like our chances,” said Mustangs coach Herb Horder. “We’ve been on a little bit of a hot streak, we figure if anyone’s going to beat them, it might as well be us.”
VCS sweeps in D-V playoffs
MODESTO — The Vacaville Christian Volleyball team made quick work of host Big Valley Christian Tuesday in the SJS Division V playoff opener, 25-22, 25-19, 25-14.
Cassi Diaz had eight kills for the Falcons (19-9).
Lauren Gottschall had five blocks and eight kills.
Alicia Borges served up six aces and added eight kills.
Lindsey Munar added seven kills with 15 assists.
VCS plays on the road Thursday against Forest Lake or Holt Academy.
