Prep girls tennis: Rodriguez’s Samonte advances to MEL finals

NAPA — Rodriguez High’s Betsy Samonte blitzed Armijo’s Reagan Corley 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Monticello Empire League girls tennis singles tournament on Thursday at Vintage High, advancing to Friday’s finals.

Samonte will meet Napa’s Jaime Hill, who topped Armijo’s Lenora Quinonez in the other semifinal, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Quinonez, the No. 1 seed, defeated Kate Pudewell of Napa, 6-4, 6-0 and Will C. Wood’s Akira Shaw 6-0, 6-1, before losing to Hill.

Corley, a freshman, also won two matches, defeating Logan Dosker of Vacaville, 6-0, 6-4 and Vintage’s Courtney Wright 6-1, 6-4, before meeting Samonte.

Armijo’s Kathleen Bohlost beat Vacaville’s Megan Reusche, 6-2, 6-3, but lost to Hill in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-3.

The doubles tournament is Friday at 9 a.m.
