Prep boys tennis: Vanden loses 8-1 in SJS playoffs to defending champ Bella Vista

By May 14, 2014

FAIR OAKS — The Vanden High boys tennis team’s surprising season came to an end with an 8-1 loss to Bella Vista in the quarterfinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament, Monday.

“They’re a good team, they won the section last year and they’re favored to win it this year,” Vikings coach Stan Lewis said.

The lone win for Vanden (14-3) was at No. 1 doubles as Reis Vince Cruz and Adam Stephens rallied to defeat Sean Inderkum and Christian Seo, 5-7, 7-5, 10-7.

The Vikings didn’t win another set with Jaime Abelon, who lost 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Gojko Gojkov at No. 5 singles, and Joseph Brooks, who fell 6-4, 6-2 to Troy Carlsen, coming closest.

“We had a good year. We weren’t expected to get a championship this year and we got a co-championship in the (Solano County Athletic Conference with American Canyon),” Lewis said. “We were expected to finish third. These kids overachieved. They made it to the quarterfinals and lost to team expected to win the championship.

“Even though we lost, every kid fought through the entire match, what they’ve been doing all year – fighting, clawing, finding a way to win.”
