NAPA — Derrick Wadsworth will be representing the Armijo High boys tennis team in the Monticello Empire League tournament singles finals as he won all his three matches, Thursday.

Wadsworth began the day defeating Will C. Wood’s Kennedy Tormay 6-0, 6-0. He only dropped two games in his next match as he bested Gavin Brazelton from Napa 6-2, 6-0. Wadsworth’s toughest match was in the semfinals against fourth-seeded Brady Hawkins from Vacaville, whom he defeated 6-1, 6-3.

“It’s really exciting to have Derrick in the finals,” Indians coach Greg Davis said. “He is going to be a wonderful representative for Armijo.”

Wadsworth will be playing Napa’s Cooper Jacklich, who topped two Armijo players to get to the finals.

Andrew Saghir opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chris Ronco of Vacaville, but fell to Jacklich 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Sean Dolan began with an upset of second-seeded Jake Floyd of Vintage 7-5, 6-2. In the quarterfinals he won 6-0, 6-0 over Rodriguez’s Jason Sagara but fell to Jacklich in the semis 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

“It’s going to be a very exciting finals” Davis said. “Both players are aggressive. It’s going to be a battle of the same styles.”

Along with the beginning of the MEL doubles tournament, the singles finals will be Monday at Vintage.

Nice article, but I thought you should know that the spelling is Derek, not Derrick
