Prep badminton: Rodriguez rolls past Armijo, 12-3

FAIRFIELD — The Rodriguez High badminton team handed cross-town rivals Armijo High its first Monticello Empire League loss winning 12-3, Tuesday.

Double winners for the Mustangs were Raiza Balancio, Bianca Cortez, Marika Ongpauco, Kristine Paeste, Janelle Sandhu and Nicole Vu.

Angelica Roxas was the only singles winner for the Indians (6-2, 5-1 MEL) as she edged Rodriguez’s Lei Paeste 21-18, 12-21, 21-18.

Another match that went three sets was at No. 6 singles as the Mustangs’ Sandhu defeated Armijo’s Stephanie Weber 21-16, 16-21, 21-12.

The Indians’ two doubles victories came from Anna Cardoso and Stephanie Sek at No. 4 with a 25-23, 21-15 win over Rodriguez’s Mikaela Peralta and May Abdelnaby, while Chelsea Oey and Sarah Youn defeated Taylor Ricatort and Sheng Thao at No. 6, 21-19, 10-21, 22-20.

Armijo hosts Davis High, Thursday, while Rodriguez entertains Vintage, Friday.
