Playoffs on the line for Vikings, others this week

FAIRFIELD — As the prep football season winds down, the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff picture becomes clearer for area teams.

The Section updated its win totals list on Monday, giving a good idea of who will likely be playing deep into November.

Out of the four Fairfield schools, only Vanden still has a shot to finish at .500 and thus in the top 64 teams that reach the postseason in Divisions I-IV.

After eight weeks of play, the Vikings (3-5) sit on the outer edge of the bubble at 87th, needing a win Friday at Benicia to ensure they’ll still have a shot heading into next week’s finale against Fairfield.

Vanden preserved its playoff hopes last week by knocking off Vallejo, which had previously beaten Benicia.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, saw its postseason chances dashed with a loss at Wood, which is now 65th with four wins, and needs to beat Vintage Friday to reach five wins.

Vacaville is in good shape moving up to 46th with a big win over Napa last week. The Bulldogs host Rodriguez this week and then face off with Wood the following week.

In the small schools divisions, Vacaville Christian and Rio Vista are both in good shape, sitting at 10th and 11th, respectively.

The top 12 teams in Divisions V-VI move on.
