ROCKVILLE — There’s no better way to extend a long winning streak than in the postseason.
The Solano Community College women’s basketball team, seeded No. 7 and on an 18-game winning streak, faces No. 2 Fresno City College in the NorCal Regional semifinals in Fresno, Wednesday.
The game is part of a doubleheader and is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
Falcons coach Matt Borchert, whose team likes to press on defense, will face another team that likes pressure.
“The key will be to handle their press, to be able to get into some kind of offense against their press and then having our pressure work,” Borchert said. “I think our transition defense will be a key as well. Fresno gets down the floor well. Our transition defense will have to be good and our ability to beat the press to get good shots. It’s going to be a war of attrition. That’s the way it is with Fresno.”
Though Fresno (27-3) is No. 2 in Northern California in scoring (82.1 points per game) and SCC (26-4) is No. 4 (80.6), the defenses could keep the final tally lower. The Falcons are No. 2 in NorCal in steals and Fresno is No. 4. Solano is also fourth in its region in rebounds, while the Rams are No. 5.
Even with Fresno giving up just 59.2 pointers per outing and Solano just 62.4, Borchert said he wouldn’t be surprised if the score similar to the team’s averages.
“We’re two of the top scoring teams in California, we both average more than 80 points per game,” the coach said. “. . . So it’s the matchup everyone’s been waiting for and the one we’ve been wanting to have. We’re looking forward to it.”
This is the team’s first meeting this season. SCC defeated Cosumnes River 73-61 in the opening round and Fresno routed Laney College of Oakland, 88-64.
Wednesday’s winner earns the right to play the winner of the Santa Rosa JC-Diablo Valley in one of two NorCal bracket finals. The winner of that game advances to the state’s Final Four.
