Prep girls basketball: Lockett, Irvin power Rodriguez past Laguna Creek

FAIRFIELD — Alijahnae Lockett poured in 21 points and Jophiea Irvin added 18 to help power the Rodriguez High girls basketball team to a 71-31 win over Laguna Creek of Sacramento in the Mustangs’ last nonleague tuneup, Monday night.

Rodriguez (7-9) led 17-6 after the first quarter and upped its lead to 66-20 after three.

“We played good defense, we played good team defense and that’s what really jump-started us and got us playing good basketball the rest of the game,” Mustangs coach Lou Collier said.

Rodriguez rolled to a 71-28 victory in the JV game. Leading the Mustangs (14-2) were Destiny Greenwood with 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and four blocks, Ranesha Gilbert with eight points, five rebounds and one block, Sierra Shackelford with seven points, four rebounds, two assists and one block, and Skylar Briscoe with seven points, two assists and one block.

Rodriguez entertains Napa on Friday to open MEL play.
