STOCKTON — The Vacaville High wresting team put up the best numbers of area teams during the first day of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships at Stockton Arena, Friday.
The Bulldogs moved five wrestlers into Saturday’s quarterfinals, automatically advancing them to the CIF State Championships next weekend at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Vaca wrestlers in the semifinals are Jordan Aquino (106 pounds), Gionn Peralta (120), Anthony Hernandez (126), Hayden Fry (147) and Jeremy Sweany (220), all of whom went 3-0, Friday.
Other Vacaville wrestlers still alive include Matt Brazet (138), Bobby Ehman (132), Quinton Cardoza (160), Steven Gomez (195) and Mike McCauley (heavyweight).
Vacaville leads Folsom in the team standings 100-95 after the first day.
Rodriguez’s Brandon Vu moved into the semifinals after going 3-0, advancing him to the state championships. Vu will face Vacaville’s Hernandez for a shot in the Masters final. Hernandez finished ahead of Vu in the Monticello Empire League and SJS Division I-AA tournaments.
The only other wrestler still alive for the Mustangs is Patrick Ferrer (heavyweight).
Armijo’s Darius Levan (106) won his first two matches by decision before falling 2-0 on a reversal by Benicia’s Christian Ramos in the quarterfinals.
The Indians’ Jorge Perez (152) went 3-1 stayed alive for a berth in the state tournament.
Both LeVan and Perez need to win one match each to medal in the tournament and at least two matches to advance to state.
Armijo’s wrestlers that were eliminated were Houston Scibek (113, 1-2), Danny Charos (160, 0-2), Amini Kapapa (170, 2-2), Billy Cimmino (182, 0-2) and Kris Elkin (220, 2-2).
Dontogan won his first match 14-3 and his second 8-3 before falling to Folsom’s Nick Fiegener by pin. He will need to win four matches to claim third place, or win at least his first match to have a chance to finish in the top seven to advance to state. Falcons’ Sanchez-Hernandez moves into semifinals
VISALIA — Fairfield High’s Alejandra Sanchez-Hernandez went 2-0 at the girls state tournament to advance into the semifinals, Friday.
Sanchez-Hernandez defeated Walnut’s Mia Dow 9-5, scoring four points in the final minute, then got by McNair’s Autumn Pacheco 5-2 to reach the semis.
Sanchez-Hernandez, two wins from a state championship, will face top-seeded Dominique Parrish of Scotts Valley in her first match at noon, Saturday.
