Local report: Poor second quarter dooms Vanden in loss

VACAVILLE — The Vanden High boys basketball team was outscored 25-11 in the second quarter and never recovered in falling 65-60 to Vacaville in a nonleague game, Tuesday.

“It took us a while to get going overall,” Vikings coach Micheal Holloway said. “We only shot 15 shots in the first half. We were 6 for 15 in the first half. We couldn’t get anything going offensively. I think we had more free throws in the second quarter than we had field goals. It’s kind of tough especially, when you give up 25 points.”

DeMarre Walker led Vanden (4-2) with 13 points, followed by Rashad Fisher with 12.

The Vikings next play Campolindo of Moraga at Merritt College of Oakland on Friday at 6 p.m.

Vacaville JV 54, Vanden 43: At Vacaville, the Vikings (1-5) got eight points from Anthony Anchante and six from Xavier Hernandez in a loss to the Bulldogs.

Vanden plays against Campolindo at Lake Merritt College at 4 p.m., Friday.

Woodland Christian 82, Buckingham Charter 61: At Woodland, the Knights (4-3) couldn’t control the fast break of the opposition in dropping a nonleague game.

“They must have had 25 points on their fast break,” Buckingham coach Dan Curry said.

Joey Morales led the Knights with 13 points, followed by Kenton Dewald with 12.

Buckingham opens up in the Falcon Classic at Vacaville Christian on Thursday.

Pinole JV 65, Rodriguez JV 49: At Fairfield, the Mustangs (2-2) fell to the Spartans with Roebi Bacancio scoring 12 points and Jemaurri Bailey had eight.
Rodriguez plays in the Davis JV tournament, Thursday.

WOODLAND — Jasmine Gonzalez had 14 points and five rebounds, while Jasmine Coutee added eight points and three assists in defeat for the Buckingham Charter girls basketball team in a 53-33 nonleague loss to Woodland Christian, Tuesday.

The Knights (3-3) play next in the Falcon Christian Classic at Vacaville Christian, Thursday.

Vanden JV 77, College Park 9: At Fairfield, all 15 Vikings scored in cruising to the 68-point victory. Monet Lewis led Vanden (5-1) with 16 points, followed by Tehya Ford with 12 and Aryel Moreland with eight.

The Vikings JV squad has a chance to avenge its only loss of the season when it opens a tournament at Del Campo of Fair Oaks against Nevada Union, Thursday.
