ROCKVILLE — The Solano Community College women’s soccer team played tough, but another early goal was the difference as the Falcons fell to undefeated Folsom Lake, 1-0, in Bay Valley Conference action, Tuesday.
SCC (5-6-3, 4-2-1 BVC) allowed a goal in the seventh minute, and played scoreless soccer after.
“Those early goals are killing us,” Falcons coach Jeff Cardinal said. “They aren’t great goals, (they are) coming on mistakes. . . . We need to be playing harder from the get-go, not waiting until (we) get scored on.
“We had a few chances, but they had more. Their keeper had two saves. Shots on goal for us was about seven.”
Goalie Danelle Hendershot made nine saves in goal for the Falcons, who host Contra Costa at 3:30 p.m., Friday.
Vanden drops just 1 set in win over Bethel
FAIRFIELD — The Vanden High tennis team dropped only one set in their 9-0 Solano County Athletic Conference win over Bethel, Tuesday.
Gabriella Arca (No. 5 singles) led the Vikings (11-2, 10-2 SCAC), losing one game in her match, defeating Briana Salazar 6-0, 6-1, while Kiwi McDaniel (No. 1 singles) and Joleena Hust (No. 2 singles) lost just two games. The doubles teams were led by Devon Smith and Lyndi Wanlass (No. 3) giving up only one game in their 6-1, 6-0 in a win over Alanna Cuevas and Abigail Dunk.
Vanden will travel to Benicia, Thursday.
Armijo 8, Vintage 1: Kathleen Boholst and Tiffini Mestes rolled to convincing victories at third and fifth singles, respectively, to keep the Armijo High girls tennis team unbeaten in the Monticello Empire League with win over Vintage, Monday.
“They were very strong,” Armijo coach Greg Davis said of Boholst and Mestes. “Their opponents were hardy players.”
The Indians (10-0, 10-0 MEL) also got victories from Regan Corley, Linh Nguyen and Jasmine Yasir in singles, as well as the doubles teams of Jaimi Garlington and Stephanie Weber at No. 1, Anna Cardoso and Angela Balolong at No. 2, and Itzel Hernandez and Maddie Godinez at No. 3.
Armijo plays Rodriguez at Green Valley Country Club on Wednesday and heads to Vacaville on Thursday. A pair of victories would clinch a tie for the MEL title.
Napa 5, Vacaville 4: At Napa, Vacaville dropped a tough MEL decision to the Indians in which nearly every match was hotly contested. Napa got key three-set wins from Corrine Tsai at No. 2 singles and Saehej Bawa at No. 6.
The Bulldogs got victories from Julia DePonte at No. 1 singles and Kennedy Buriani at No. 4, as well as the doubles teams of Mackenna Smith and Kara Benz at No. 1 and Emily Brown and Bre Castanho at No. 3.
Vacaville entertains Wood on Wednesday.
Vikings win to stay perfect on season
FAIRFIELD — The Vanden High boys soccer team took a step closer to its first league title with an 8-0 Solano County Athletic Conference win over Fairfield at George A. Gammon Field, Monday.
The Vikings (13-0, 10-0 SCAC) took the lead with a goal by Santino Atanasov that was assisted by Jando Lara in the fifth minute and never looked back.
Vanden also got first-half goals by Youcef Rezagui in the eighth and 24th minutes, by Steward Pimienta in the 11th and 17th minutes, by Dominiq Laird in the 20th minute and by Jard Vitug in the 35th minute.
Jando Lara rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal from 35 yards out in the 58th minute.
Vanden got assists from Lara, Pimienta, Rezagui, Riley Pedro, Eddie Torres, Brandon Gajeski and Patrick Dazo as well as solid defense from Enrique Vega.
The Vikings take on defending SCAC champion Benicia on Wednesday and can all but lock up the conference title with a victory.
Vanden won the JV game 5-0, getting two goals in the first half, three in the second.
Gabe Zepeda got the first goal for the Vikings off an assist by Jake Sheppard. Joey Mesa made it 2-0, scoring off a Roel Rafael pass.
In the second half, Louis Solis scored from 45 yards out following a pass by Paul Peña, Devin Times scored on an assist by Mesa and Gabe Zepeda netted the final goal in last 10 minutes unassisted.
San Juan 3, VCS 2: At Citrus Heights, the Falcons lost on a last-minute goal, Tuesday.
The Falcons (3-5-3, 1-4-3 SDL) were up 1-0 at the half after a Jason Archuleta goal off a Matt Brown corner kick. After falling behind 2-1, Vacaville Christian scored their last goal in the 66th on a bicycle kick from Matt Burnett, thrown in by Stephen Gloudeman.
The Falcons host Golden Sierra, Thursday.
Wood 2, Rodriguez 1: At Fairfield, the Mustangs (1-14, 0-11) got a second-half goal from Eduardo Nuno in suffering their 26th straight MEL loss. Ryan Cunning and David Frazer scored for the Wildcats, with Adam Cunning getting an assist.
Rodriguez is at Napa on Wednesday, while Wood (4-9-1, 4-7 MEL) hosts Vintage.
Vanden cruises to win over Vallejo
FAIRFIELD — The Vanden High volleyball team defeated Vallejo in Solano County Athletic Conference play, winning in straight sets, Tuesday, 25-13, 25-8, 25-15.
Mackensie Murphy led the Vikings (9-3, 7-2 SCAC), going 24 of 25 on serves with five aces, and added seven kills and four digs. KC Nidao was perfect at the line, serving nine for nine and chipped in 19 assists. Mia Pau and Annalyse Sylva were a combined six for six serving with 12 kills, while Sylva added six blocks.
The JV team won 25-6, 25-17 as Victoria Coleman led Vanden, going six for six (all aces) with two kills and a block, while Malia Johnson was also a perfect six of six with five aces and three digs.
The Vikings travel to Fairfield High, today.
Rodriguez 3, Wood 0: At Vacaville, Jade Horder amassed 30 assists and seven aces to help lift the Mustangs to a 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 Monticello Empire League victory over the Wildcats, Monday. Megan Bohoroquez added 12 kills and Claudia Diaz seven for the Mustangs (14-5, 5-4 MEL).
Rodriguez won the junior varsity match 25-18, 25-23.
The Mustangs host Armijo on Wednesday.
Vintage 3, Armijo 0: At Fairfield, Katie Halls had nine assists, four digs and an ace to lead the efforts of the Indians (0-13, 0-9 MEL) in a 25-16, 25-13, 25-16 setback.
Mariah Reyes added 10 digs, three kills and an ace, while Jessica Pamatian had six digs, two kills, two aces and a block.
In JV play, Vintage prevailed 25-14, 25-19 with Kimberly Avina getting three kills, Bella Fondersmith four digs and Irene Morfidis three aces for Armijo.
The Indians are at Rodriguez on Wednesday.
Vacaville Christian 3, Encina Prep 0: At Vacaville, the Falcons (13-3, 7-0) stayed unbeaten in the Sierra Delta League with a 25-3, 25-9, 25-6 victory.
Vacaville Christian got nine aces from Lindsey Munar and six aces from both Brittney Hockersmith and Alex Wolfsberger.
The JV match was also a sweep as VCS won 25-4, 25-23. Hannah Thompson led the Falcons (7-7, 5-2 SDL) with eight aces, while Helen Norris added six.
Vacaville Christian hosts El Dorado Adventist on Wednesday in varsity-only competition.
Prep girls golf
FAIRFIELD — The Armijo High golf team scored a 647, followed by Rodriguez High with a 676 when they competed in the Monticello Empire League golf tournament, Tuesday.
The Indians best score cam from Mariah Kalamaras, who carded a 120. Xylina Rusit followed with a 122, while Christina Vigil shot a 125. Rounding out Armijo's team was Caroline Newell (142), Sarah Campi (138) and Amanda Chevalier (157).
The Mustangs were led by Alexa Maletsky, who shot a 125, with Elana McCormick finishing just behind with a 128. Sarah Ho carded a 130, followed by Malia Aiavao (146), Cecelia Bard (147) and Adena Maier (152).
Will C. Wood won the tournament, shooting 501.
Bill and Mark’s Classic scheduled for Nov. 8
NAPA — The inaugural Bill and Mark’s Golf Classic to benefit special needs children and adults is scheduled for Nov. 8 at Chardonnay Golf Course.
Registration is at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. An entry fee applies. The first 144 to sign up and pay their entry fee make the cut.
