SANTA BARBARA — The second time out was a better showing for the Solano Community College women’s basketball team.

The Falcons (1-1) bounced back from a tough loss in their season opener to top San Diego Mesa 59-50 in the consolation semifinals at the Santa Barbara City College Tournament Friday.

“One of our main goals is to play the extent of the tournament,” Falcons coach Matt Borchert said. “We faced elimination, so I gave my Bruce Bochy elimination speech.”

Clearly that speech worked as the Falcons had a much better day. Taylor Hamilton exploded for 19 points to lead Solano, while Cheyenne Shepherd and Alexcia Jennings each scored nine and Lucy Santos added eight.

Hamilton also had six steals and three assists. Kristina Kountouris had a team-high seven rebounds with four assists and four steals.

“We played hard, overcame some shooting woes,” Borchert said. “We were down nine early in second half, so we changed up our defense and came roaring back.”

Jennings was huge off the bench getting all of her points from beyond the arc. Stephanie Saelee came off the bench to spark the defense as well

“We got a very good effort and good contributions from the bench,” Borchert said.

Solano faces Grossmont at 1 p.m. today in the consolation final.
