SANTA BARBARA — It was a rough start to the season for the youthful Solano Community College women’s basketball team Thursday as the Falcons fell 50-42 to Riverside at the Santa Barbara City College Tournament.
Cheyenne Shepherd led Solano (0-1) with 13 points and seven rebounds, but she was the lone Falcon to score in double digits.
“We just didn’t handle pressure very well. We struggled to run offense and we turned the ball over 40 times,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “It was an ugly game. We really kind of shot ourselves in the foot.”
With just Shepherd returning from last year’s team, there’s going to be a learning curve, Borchert noted.
“It was a lot of young kids trying to get acclimated to college basketball,” he said.
Taylor Hamilton added seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Falcons, while Ariel Clay snared seven rebounds to go with her six points.
Trailing 29-18 at the break, the Falcons did manage to make a run in the second half and kept it close into the final three minutes.
“I’m really proud that we really battled,” Borchert said. “They just have more athletes than we do. We were just getting pushed around.”
Solano continues in the consolation bracket today at 3 p.m. against San Diego Mesa.
