FAIRFIELD — The Rodriguez High JV football team rolled to a 51-0 shutout of Fairfield, Friday.
Bryan Cortez threw three touchdown passes, two 10-yard scoring passes to T.J. McCormick and another 50-yarder to Tay Williams.
Defense and special teams led to three other scores for Rodriguez with Richard Borrough returning a fumble 10 yards, Anthony Cable running back a 70-yard interception and Jemaurri Bailey taking back a kickoff 50 yards after a safety.
Bailey later added a 15-yard scoring run and Anthony Mondragon kicked seven extra points for the Mustangs.
Rodriguez coach Aaron Montes noted Brandon Morgado played very well, with his ill mother in attendance.
“It was special for him,” Montes said. “We did it for him. That young man played his heart out for his mom.
“The biggest thing for us is we are able to taste a little victory. They know what’s ahead of them.”
Fairfield coach Keith Aguilar said his team couldn’t stay organized, though in the first two quarters, the Falcons were respectable.
“We made way too many mental errors. Our defense actually did good stopping them the first half. Mental errors killed us.”
Benicia JV 61, Armijo 22: At Benicia, the Indians fell to 1-2 on the season, even after a 56-yard scoring run by Elijah Toney.
Jordan Allen returned an interception for a TD for Armijo, and Kevin Smith scored on a 1-yard plunge, then added a 2-point conversion run for the Indians’ final points.
