In a season filled with nail-biting victories and moving up in the national rankings, the unbeaten Fresno State football team enjoyed a rare breather on Saturday with a 38-14 downing of UNLV.
Rodriguez High graduate and starting tight end Marcel Jensen caught three passes for 25 yards for the Bulldogs (6-0), who are 17th in the BCS rankings and are ranked 15th by The Associated Press and 18th by USA Today.
Jensen, who’s on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, which goes to the nation’s top collegiate tight end, has 17 receptions for 251 yards with an average of 14.8 yards per catch.
Pacific (5-1) suffered its first lost of the season, but it took a game-winning field goal with :02 left to give Pacific Lutheran a 17-16 victory. Craig Bailey (Fairfield) had six tackles and broke up two passes for the Boxers.
Basil Bandy (Rodriguez) played for Fort Hays State as the Tigers won their third straight by defeating Southwest Baptist 56-14.
Tra’Mayne Bondurant started for Arizona (4-2) in a 35-24 win over Utah.
In Sacramento State’s 31-7 defeat of North Dakota, Markell Williams (Vacaville) had six tackles, including a sack, for the for Hornets (4-4). Randey Peterson (Vanden) and Chris Broadnax (Vanden) both saw action for Sac State.
Deone Bucannon (Vanden) had nine tackles, including one for a loss, and also forced and recovered a fumble as Washington State (4-4) dropped a 62-38 decision to Oregon.
Dixie State fell 46-34 to Western Oregon as Myles Burton (Rodriguez) rushed 15 times for 47 yards and caught a pass for five yards for the Red Storm (2-5).
Quincy Forte (Vacaville) ran 10 times for 51 yards to help lead Eastern Washington (5-2) to a 34-10 win over Southern Utah (5-3). Myles Carelock (Vanden, Rodriguez) broke up a pass for the Thunderbirds.
In St. Cloud State’s 20-13 win over University of Mary, Damon Treat (Vanden) caught two passes for eight yards, returned two punts for 19 yards and ran back one kickoff for 27 yards for the Huskies (6-1).
Keith Welch Jr. (Fairfield) threw a school-record 73 passes with 38 completions for 481 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions as Lewis and Clark lost 56-30 to Willamette. Greg Goodenough (Vacaville Christian) had a tackle for the Pioneers (1-5).
Brock Hekking had three tackles, including a sack, but it wasn’t enough to keep Nevada (3-4) from blowing a 17-7 halftime lead in a 34-17 loss to Boise State.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo gave up the game-tying touchdown with 12 seconds left in regulation and then fell in overtime 21-14 to Montana. Alex Hubbard (Fairfield) had four tackles, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass for the Mustangs (3-4).
LaRyan King (Vacaville) had three tackles and Johnny Schupp (Vacaville) saw action for Colorado State (3-4) in a 52-22 walloping of Wyoming.
A 5-yard touchdown run by Melvin Mason (Vacaville) started a run of 55 unanswered points as Southern Oregon (4-3) iced Montana State-Northern 55-28, finishing the game with 60 yards on nine carries. Ammir Souder (Armijo) had a tackle for the Raiders.
In Murray State’s 31-3 pounding of Austin Peay, Jordan Morrow (Rodriguez) ran twice for 17 yards for the Racers (5-3).
Cameron Richmond (Rodriguez) caught five passes for 59 yards, including TDs of 15 and 20 yards, as Idaho State (3-4) fell 39-30 to Northern Arizona.
New Mexico Highlands (2-5) was edged 24-20 by Adams State with Eric Smith (Vanden) making three tackles and broke up a pass for the Cowboys.
Keith Williams (Fairfield) played for San Diego (4-3) in a 45-38 double overtime loss to Dayton.
Jason Verrett (Rodriguez) made four tackles, including one for a loss, and broke up a pass for TCU in a 24-10 loss to Oklahoma State.
In UC Davis’ 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-11 loss to UC Santa Barbara, Devon Damelio (Rodriguez) led the Aggies (11-9) with 18 kills, 17 digs and six assists. She also had eight kills, 13 digs and four assists in a 3-1 win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Jazmin Wallace (Fairfield) had 15 digs and one assist, while Alexis Angier (Vacaville) contributed one dig for Simpson (4-13) in a 3-1 defeat of Embry-Riddle. Earlier, Wallace had one assist and seven digs in a 3-0 loss to La Sierra.
Tatum Bales (Wood, Solano) led Holy Names led Holy Names (0-21) in digs in 3-0 losses to UC Santa Cruz, Academy of Art and Dixie State, amassing 43 digs, two assists and two kills for the week.
Sarah Cusick (Wood) had a team-high 17 kills and added 15 digs and one block as Pacific Union (14-7) downed UC Merced 3-1. She earlier led the Pioneers with 11 kills and had 17 digs in a 3-1 loss to Menlo. Lainey Brown (Vacaville Christian, Solano) had one dig for the Oaks (12-5) and later had one assist and four digs in a 3-1 win over UC Merced.
Erica Ramirez (Armijo, Solano) made two saves in helping Columbia College (11-2-1) roll past Park 7-1.
Barbara Bakh played for University of Mary as the Marauders (3-9-2) blanked Wayne State 4-0.
In Cal State East Bay’s 1-0 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay, Briana Scholtens (Rodriguez, Solano) recorded one save for the Pioneers.
Nyack (5-7-2) shelled Chestnut Hill 2-0 as Sandy Garcia (Solano) took a shot and Alexsa Gonzalez (Solano) also played for the Warriors.
Karlie Mast (Solano) saw action for Northwest Christian (3-9-1) in a 2-0 loss to Corban.
Cecilee Kidd played for Missouri Valley (10-3-3) in a 1-1 tie with Oklahoma Wesleyan and a 1-0 edging of MidAmerica Nazarene.
