Week 4 prep football capsules
Armijo (1-2) vs. Vanden (2-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Vanden
Series: Armijo leads 8-6
Last meeting: 2010, Vanden won 51-0
Last week: Armijo lost to Benicia 40-6; Vanden lost to Highland of Pocatello, Idaho, 35-34
Of note: Both teams are coming off disappointing road losses, the Indians at Benicia, the Vikings at Moscow, Idaho. Armijo turned the ball over on its first four possessions and didn’t score until the fourth quarter, which had a running clock by that point. Vanden held its own against one of Idaho’s best, Highland of Pocatello, with the game decided by an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt. . . . In Vanden’s only other out of state game, a 51-29 loss to Hug of Reno in 1992, the Vikings gave up 692 yards rushing and 724 total yards, both school records. . . . Vanden QB Ben Scott’s 220 yards last week made him just the second player in city history to go over the career 5,000-yard mark. He now has 5,097 and trails only Tra’Mayne Bondurant, who had 5,619 for Fairfield between 2008-2010. . . . Look for Armijo to air it out a bit tonight. Jacob Chauvin hit Malachi Lewis in stride with a bomb that turned into a 68-yard TD. . . . Vanden’s won the last three meetings by a combined score of 133-3.
Prediction: Vanden 45, Armijo 7
Fairfield (0-3) vs. Vallejo (1-2)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Vallejo
Series: Tied 17-17
Last meeting: 2010, Fairfield won 42-6
Last week: Fairfield lost to Rodriguez 13-12; Vallejo lost to Napa 59-6
Of note: Two struggling teams square off at Corbus Field tonight. The Falcons have yet to rush for 100 yards in any game this season and have a combined 163 yards and four TDs on the ground through three games. They’ve also been held to 120 or fewer total yards in their last two games. Vallejo, meanwhile, is coming off a 53-point loss to Napa, which makes tonight’s game very tough to call and gives the Falcons something to worry about down the road. They play at Napa on Oct. 28 . . . Fairfield has led just once in the series with a 13-12 edge after a 20-14 win in 1999. A win tonight would put Fairfield up 18-17
If you go: Take Interstate 80 west to Vallejo and exit at Redwood Street. Go west on Redwood to Tuolumne Street and turn left. Go south on Tuolumne to Nebraska Street and turn right. Look for the school and Corbus Field on the right. Vallejo High is at 840 Nebraska St.
Prediction: Fairfield 24, Vallejo 20
Rodriguez (1-2) vs. Monterey Trail (2-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Monterey Trail
Series: First meeting
Last week: Rodriguez defeated Fairfield 13-12; Monterey Trail defeated Florin 54-14
Of note: The level of competition goes up exponentially for the Mustangs this week. Monterey Trail, also the Mustangs, was expected to contend for the Sac-Joaquin Section title and, as its 40-point win over Florin attests, it’s trying to live up to that promise. . . . The local Mustangs played their best defensive game of the year last week, allowing just 108 yards to Fairfield, but still haven’t gotten things going offensively. Their yardage totals have dropped from 336 against Vacaville to 243 against Las Lomas to 151 against Fairfield. They’ll need more pop to stay with the other Mustangs.
If you go: Take Interstate 80 east to Sacramento and Highway 50 east to Highway 99. Take Highway 99 south. Take the Calvine Road exit and go east to Auberry Drive. Turn right and go south to Power Inn Road. The school is at the corner of Power Inn and Auberry. Monterey Trail is at 8661 Power Inn Road.
Prediction: Monterey Trail 42, Rodriguez 13
Vacaville (2-1) vs. Valley Christian (1-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Valley Christian, San Jose
Series: Valley Christian leads 1-0
Last meeting: 2010, Valley Christian won 48-7
Last week: Vacaville defeated Granite Bay 38-27; Valley Christian lost to Cardinal Newman 35-28
Of note: The Warriors, ranked 10th in the Calhisports.com Division I North Bowl rankings, handed the Bulldogs, ranked 13th in Division II North, their only regular season loss last season, just one of two games in which the orange and black was held under 45 points. Both teams have played impressive schedules as last week’s outcomes attest. . . . Valley Christian RB Jarrod Lawson rambled for 211 yards against state-ranked Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, according to Maxpreps.com, not a good sign considering that last year the Warriors rolled for 409 yards on the ground and 548 total against the Bulldogs, the most they gave up all season.
If you go: Take Interstate 680 south to San Jose. Take Highway 101 south. Take the Capitol Expressway/Yerba Buena Road exit and merge right onto East Capitol Expressway. Take the Monterey Road ramp. Merge onto Monterey Road/Highway 82 south via the ramp on the left toward Gilroy. Turn left onto Skyway Drive. The school will be on the right at 100 Skyway Drive.
Prediction: Valley Christian 38, Vacaville 35
Wood (1-2) vs. Benicia (2-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Zunino Stadium, Vacaville
Series: Wood leads 4-1
Last meeting: 2010, Wood won 28-14
Last week: Wood defeated Davis 33-26; Benicia defeated Armijo 40-6
Of note: The Wildcats have surrendered a combined 521 passing yards the last two weeks, according to Maxpreps.com, a stat that’s worrisome considering pass-happy Benicia’s coming to town. Panthers QB Ryan Bohnet was a tidy 15 of 23 for 234 yards and two TDs against Armijo. . . . Wood counters with a potent running attack. In last week’s win over Davis, nine different runners combined for 350 yards, according to Maxpreps.com
Prediction: Benicia 33, Wood 24
Vacaville Christian (3-0) vs. Golden Sierra (2-2)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Golden Sierra
Series: Golden Sierra leads 1-0
Last meeting: 2010, Golden Sierra won 30-14
Last week: Vacaville Christian had a bye; Golden Sierra lost to El Dorado 28-6
Of note: The Falcons used to make successful road trips to Foresthill, so going to Garden Valley shouldn’t take too much starch out of their feathers. What hurts, however, is being off two weeks — last week for a bye, Sept. 9 because Stone Ridge Christian forfeited after failing to order officials.
If you go: Take Interstate 80 east into Auburn and pick up Highway 49. Go south on Highway 49 to Marshall Road. Turn left on Marshall and go east to Garden Valley Road. Turn right on Garden Valley and look for the school on the left. Golden Sierra is at 5101 Garden Valley Road.
Prediction: Golden Sierra 24, Vacaville Christian 19
Rio Vista (4-0) vs. Bradshaw Christian (3-1)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Where: At Bradshaw Christian
Series: Bradshaw Christian leads 1-0
Last meeting: 2010, Bradshaw won 70-28
Last week: Rio Vista defeated Brookside Christian 56-34; Bradshaw Christian defeated Foothill 42-33
Of note: The Rams, ranked fourth in the Calhisports.com D-IV bowl North rankings, rolled up season-highs for points (56), rushing yards (576) and total yards (634) last week, but come up against a fellow state-ranked foe. The Pride, ranked fifth in D-IV North, is coming off an impressive win over perennial power Foothill, a school with roughly 1,000 more students, according to Sac-Joaquin Section enrollment figures.
If you go: Take Interstate 80 and Highway 50 to Sacramento. Take the Bradshaw Road exit and turn right (south) onto Bradshaw Road. The school will be on the right at 8324 Bradshaw Road.
Prediction: Bradshaw Christian 48, Rio Vista 40
Last week’s prediction record: 5-1; Season record: 19-3
Solano County Rankings: 1, Vacaville (2-1). 2, Vanden (2-1). 3, Bethel (3-1). 4, Benicia (2-1). 5, Wood (1-2). 6, St. Patrick’s (1-1). 7, Rodriguez (1-2). 8, Vallejo (1-2). 9, Fairfield (0-3). 10, Rio Vista (4-0). 11, Vacaville Christian (3-0). 12, Armijo (1-2). 13, Dixon (0-3).
