Week 1 prep football preview capsules
Armijo (0-0) vs. Davis (0-0)
When: Today, 7:30 p.m. Where: Brownlee Field, Armijo
Series: Davis leads 14-9-7
Last meeting: 2010, Davis won 31-6
Last week: Neither team played
Of note: Both teams start the season looking to end long skids, the Indians riding a school-record 16-game losing streak, the Blue Devils having dropped nine straight and 12 of their last 13. In fact, Davis’ only win in 2010 came over Armijo in last year’s season opener. It was outscored 371-149 in its nine other games. Former Armijo player Aaron Toliver begins his tenure as coach of the Indians, whose best chances of ending their losing streak happen in the first two weeks of the season. Next week’s foe, Valley of Sacramento, also got its only win in 2010 over Armijo. . . . Davis has an advantage with a returning QB in senior Shayne Reagan, who completed 8 of 9 passes for 138 yards and two TDs against the Indians last year, according to Maxpreps.com. He finished the season with 1,519 yards and 18 TDs, including a school-record five against Elk Grove.

Series: Bethel leads 3-2
Last meeting: 2005, Bethel won 19-12
Last week: Fairfield didn’t play; Bethel lost 35-14 to Buhach Colony of Atwater.
Of note: The Falcons begin the post-Tra’Mayne Bondurant era with a much more winable game than last year’s opener against Monterey Trail. Replacing Bondurant at QB is junior Keith Williams, a transfer from Rodriguez. . . . The Jaguars managed just 80 yards of offense last week, 61 of it rushing, according to the Merced Sun-Star, with both its touchdowns the result of turnovers. One fumble was returned for a touchdown, while a second set up Bethel on a short field. The Thunder, meanwhile, rumbled for 325 yards on the ground. . . . Fairfield won both meetings when the schools were in the MEL, Bethel all three when they were in the SCAC. This is the first nonleague game in the series. Only the last meeting had a final within seven points. The average margin of victory in the other four was 29.5 points. . . . The Falcons were 5-5 in 2010, the Jaguars 6-5.

Hurst threw for 4,403 as Scott’s predecessor under center at Vanden. Scott has 4,350 yards and is ranked fourth on the city’s all-time passing list. He needs 416 yards to pass Keith Welch Jr., who had 4,765 for Fairfield from 2006-08 and 1,270 to top Tra’Mayne Bondurant, the all-time city leader who had 5,619 for Fairfield from 2008-10. . . . Of note: Jason Ott leads the Mustangs against what’s annually the top team in Solano County in his first game as Rodriguez coach. Both teams graduated a ton of offensive talent, though the Bulldogs return 1,000-yard back Melvin Mason, who ran for 62 yards and a touchdown in last year’s meeting. . . . The Mustangs have dropped three straight season openers and seven in their first nine seasons. They’ve started the last two season 0-4 before righting the ship and winning at least a piece of the SCAC title. Ott would like nothing better than to stop the 0-4 trend his first time out. . . . The Bulldogs have won five straight season openers and 8 of 11 since 2000. . . . Vacaville went 10-2, Rodriguez 6-5 in 2010.

With most of its top talent graduated, Wood is reloading for the first time under second-year coach Carlos Meraz. . . . Pioneer pulverized Liberty Ranch last week on the ground as Jacob Schoch rumbled for 335 yards and Jimmy Mahoney for 257 with six TDs between then, according to Maxpreps.com.
