Vikings sail past Indians 28-9
FAIRFIELD — If anyone could make a moral victory out of a 19-point loss it’s the Armijo High football team.
The Indians, who’d been outscored by Vanden 133-3 over the last three years, hung tough for most of the game before the Vikings secured a 28-9 victory at George A. Gammon Field on Friday night.
“We are there,” Armijo coach Aaron Toliver said. “We didn’t quit. We were still fired up even though the score didn’t work out in our favor.”
Vanden coach LeVon Haynes was likewise pleased with his team’s performance.
“Today we established our run game a little bit,” the coach said. “I’m excited about that.”
He also like the way Ben Scott, who’d been out sick most of the week, came off the bench and ignited the offense. The senior quarterback completed 10 of 18 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown.
“He came in and did good, being the leader that he is,” Haynes said.
Yet the first pass of Scott’s that was caught was hauled in by Armijo’s Enrique Garrido-Ramirez, who stepped in front of a receiver at the Indians 5-yard line and raced down the left sideline for a touchdown.
The 95-yard return tied for the fourth-longest both in school and city history.
Down 7-6, the Indians (1-3) went for two but Ren Gibbs was stopped short.
Vanden (3-1) took over from there. Having taken a 7-0 lead on an 8-yard run by J.J. Hong following an Angel Carbajal fumble recovery at the Armijo 14, the Vikings went 77 yards in eight plays following the Indians’ touchdown.
Oshea Bryant capped the drive by bullying his way over from 2 yards out 8 minutes, 45 seconds into the second quarter.
Vanden needed just two plays to score the next time it got the ball — a 73-yard bomb from Scott to Christian Basden, longest pass play in school history not to result in a touchdown, and a 5-yard run to pay dirt by Bryant.
Up 21-6 at the break, the Vikings scored for the last time on their first possession of the second half, going 79 yards in seven plays with Scott completing four straight passes, including a 12-yard crossing pass to Cody Holbein for the touchdown.
Armijo’s final points came on a 22-yard field goal by Victor Calderon with 5:16 left in the game.
Next week Vanden travels to Napa to play Vintage, while Armijo is at Rodriguez.

You may want to check the film, looked like a 99yd pic six by Enrique Garrido-Ramirez…….
Noteworthy that Vanden had to bring Scott back in a weakened condition to hold off Armijo. Moral victories do exist. Vanden’s the best team in the city … obviously. http://bit.ly/mSfgR9
