Vanden upends conference-leading Vallejo

By From page B1 | October 20, 2012

FAIRFIELD — When the Vanden High Vikings needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, they got one, dethroning Solano County Athletic Conference-leading Vallejo with a 26-16 win.

The Vikings did it by stifling the Apaches in the first half, dominating time of possession, limiting Vallejo to six plays in the first quarter and holding them to 103 yards of total offense in the first half.

Despite the efficiency, Vanden did trail early in the second quarter after a Jadon Brisendine punt took a short, sharp angle to the left of the line and landed in the hands Vallejo’s Danzil White, who faced few defenders on a 46-yard return that took him down to the Vikings’ 3-yard line. Two plays and a 2-point conversion later, the Apaches held an 8-6 advantage.

Vanden answered back by scoring the next 20 points. Running back Ren Littlepage had touchdowns of 1 and 7 yards on his way to 102 first-half yards, his legs powering the Vikings’ 12-8 halftime edge.

In the second half, Vanden put Brisendine’s arm to work, with 120 of his 260 passing yards guiding the Vikings to two third-quarter touchdowns threw the air.

The first came with 6 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the third, when Christian Basden looked over his shoulder, snared Brisendine’s toss and ran untouched down his own sideline to pay dirt to give Vanden an 18-8 lead.

The Vikings pushed it to 26-8 when Brisendine connected on a 22-yard toss, this time to a diving Dion Williams at the back left edge of the end zone.

The Apaches scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to close the gap, but Vanden was able to hold them scoreless on their two successive drives.

With the win, Vanden’s record improves to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC. Vallejo falls to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.

Vanden JV 34, Vallejo 8: D’Angelo Greene threw for 21- and 35-yard touchdowns and ran for a 7-yarder as the Vikings rolled to a win against the Apaches’ junior varsity squad.

Javin White caught the 21-yard TD pass in addition to scoring on a 55-yard run. Christian Pointer hauled in Greene’s 35-yard TD pass. Isiah Hamilton scored on a 12-yard run.

The win improves Vanden’s record to 6-2 overall and 2-1 against SCAC competition.
