Bulldogs trample Falcons in MEL rout
FAIRFIELD — There was little for Fairfield High football fans to cheer on Senior Night as the host Falcons went quietly against Vacaville in a 56-7 Monticello Empire League rout.
Racked by injuries, Fairfield (1-6, 0-2 MEL) was missing a handful of starters and key reserves, putting the backups to the test against the odds-on favorites to win the MEL title.
It was quickly apparent that Vacaville meant business.
Despite turning the ball over to the Falcons three plays into the first drive of the game, the Bulldogs turned right around a picked off John Garrott’s first pass of the game — a two-handed grab by Jacob Te’o for a 25-yard return and a 7-0 Vacaville lead less than three minutes into the game.
Three plays into the ensuing possession, Fairfield again coughed up the ball. This time Vacaville’s Melvin Mason raced 40 yards to the house on the first play from scrimmage for a 14-0 lead.
It was just that kind of night for the Falcons.
“I didn’t have my quarterback, fullback, wingback, one lineman, linebacker and two others who were hurt,” said Fairfield coach Jack Canavesio, while also crediting Vacaville for executing its game plan. “They did exactly what they were supposed to do.”
Mason added another touchdown in the first quarter on a 19-yard run. He led Vacaville with 110 yards on seven carries with two scores.
Meanwhile, the lone bright spot for Fairfield was running back Jordon Harris, who ran for a game-high 133 yards on 12 carries and Fairfield lone TD.
With the Falcons trailing 35-0 late in the second quarter, Harris took a handoff from Garrott and plowed through the Bulldogs’ defense for a 73-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left before the half.
That staved off the running clock for at least a while in the third quarter.
“We saw a couple things open up in their defense, and Jordon made things happen,” Canavesio said. “He was the workhorse tonight.”
Canavesio also credited backup fullback Damarie Richardson for doing a solid job, finishing with 45 yards on 13 carries.
Vacaville added three more touchdowns in the second half, the first a 53-yard sprint by Te’o for a 43-7 lead that triggered the running clock.
“It’s tough, but I told the kids you got to keep your heads up high,” Canavesio said. “Our goal is to win the last three games.”
Fairfield is on the road the remainder of the season, starting with Napa next week.
