Bethel bests Rodriguez, 34-14

FAIRFIELD — Each time the Rodriguez High Mustangs galloped into striking distance in Friday’s 34-14 loss to Vallejo’s Bethel High, the Jaguars beat them right back down.

Bethel’s Deon Beck was particularly good at delivering the blows.

Take the opening kickoff at Coach Ed Hopkins Memorial Stadium, when Beck thundered across the field for an 86-yard return for a touchdown, giving his team a 6-0 lead 12 seconds into the game.

After a safety, when Bethel (6-1, 2-0) led 8-6, it was Beck, rolling 57 yards down his own sideline to give his squad a 14-6 edge.

With the Mustangs in the red zone in the second quarter, it was Beck again, snatching a Jordan Riggins pass at his own 3. Two plays later, Greg Brooks snatched a Rodney Cook pass and went 84 yards to the end zone to give Bethel a 20-6 lead.

When Rodriguez was trailing by 8 in the fourth quarter, it was — who else? — Beck who burst through the line and flew untouched through the Mustangs secondary, running 37 yards for his third score of the night.

Rodriguez seemed to always be within reach. After Beck’s opening kickoff return, the Mustangs (3-4, 1-1) shot back, tying the tilt at 6 just 30 seconds into the contest after Jordan Riggins hooked up with a wide-open Wayne Thomas for a 70-yard score.

On the closing drive of the first half, penalties and a persistent ground game gave Rodriguez a 1st-and-10 from 13 yards out, but Riggins’ pass was incomplete as time expired.

The Mustangs struggled all night through the air, with Riggins completing 2-of-16 passes with two interceptions for 88 yards.

Knowing this, Rodriguez coach Jason Ott moved his team to the ground game to start the second half, with Austin Kindle and Myles Burton trading carries on an eight-play, 44-yard drive to close it to 20-14. Kindle struck the decisive blow, with a teammate clutching his jersey and dragging him forward through defenders across the goal line for a 3-yard TD tote.

On their next possession, facing 4th-and-inches near midfield, Riggins appeared to get the first down, but officials called him down after a pack of Jaguars defenders pushed him back into his own territory for a 6-yard loss.

Burton and Kindle tallied 81 and 78 yards, respectively, to lead the Mustangs’ ground attack. Beck led all rushers with 108 yards.

After the game, Ott said he felt “little mental mistakes” were the difference in the game.

“It was our overall execution,” the coach said. “They’re a fast, quick, veteran team. We had some miscues and Bethel took advantage.”

  1. This Mus-Tang team is attrocious at the Quarterback position. We sit in the visitor stands and wonder why they aren’t trying to get better for the future by putting this horse out to pasture. Yes, my girlfriend and I have to. See this has been the biggest mistake moving to Cordelia village because we are forced to have her daughters attend this wreck of a school. They have no prioriety towards sports, this is evident the way they waited till summer to hire Football coaches. See I coached Jr. college football for 16 seasons in Southern California until I developed a cardiovascular problem. I wanted to approach this coach to see if I could do anything to help them. But, the fans or lack of class fans that I have encountered are absolutly CLULESS!!!! That’s why her and I nolonger sit in the unfriendly confinds of Hopkins stadium.Hey, coach do what you do. Oh, and by the way don’t you have a Junior Varsity Quarterback you could elevate? So the program could progress and build for the future. Word to the wise take your growing pains now or re-live them again next year. Good Luck

  2. I am surprised you and your last minute staff have won three games most coaches are fully commited and had already been to camp by the time you were hired. That’s says alot about your connections and ability to get coaches to follow you into hell. These PETTYFOGGER parents need to just take a deep breath and get over what play you should have ran and what practice should be like, recognize that you can’t win, you could go 10-0 and your e-mail box would be full of another sort of complaints, the cowardly parents would still be unsatisfied. The stands would still be full of unhappy parents. My kid didn’t get in the game because you were trying to go undefeated. My kid didn’t get in the game because you dis-like my child. You are someplace where you can’t please anyone but your self and your staff for doing honorable work. GOD BLESS YOU TWICE COACH YOU AND YOURS HAVE TREATED MY SON RESPECTFUL FROM DAY ONE.

  3. College bound athlete

Hey Savage amusement. You based your position of the quarterback on that one game. Now look at him. He’s lead his team to more than 45 point games back to back and has had 10 total touchdowns in just the past two weeks. What do you have to say now?
