Benicia rolls to 40-6 win over Armijo

BENICIA — Too many turnovers and too much Austin Carr.

Armijo High lost two fumbles and had two passes intercepted — in just the first quarter — and Carr scored five touchdowns as Benicia rolled to a 40-6 nonleague victory on Friday night.

“That’ll do it,” Indians coach Aaron Toliver said. “Six touchdowns (for Benicia) and five turnovers.”

The bright spot for Armijo (1-2) came in the fourth quarter when Malachi Lewis hauled in a bomb from quarterback Jacob Chauvin and raced down the right sideline for a 68-yard touchdown.

“That pass was nice,” Toliver said. “I think our line played hard the second half.”

Armijo essentially played hard the whole game. It just couldn’t hold onto the ball, especially in the first quarter when all four of its possessions ended in turnovers.

A muffed pitch from Chauvin to Jairon Gacosta on the second play of the game was recovered by Benicia’s Nimer Munakash, giving the Panthers (2-1) the ball at the Indians’ 18-yard line.

Two plays later, Carr went off left tackle from 3 yards out for the first of his five touchdowns.

Armijo’s next possession ended after three plays when Cameron Whyte intercepted a pass at the Benicia 47. The Panthers embarked on an eight-play, 53-yard march with quarterback Ryan Bohnet hitting Chris Dadson over the middle from 25 yards out.

A fumbled exchange between Chauvin and Enrique Garrido-Ramirez ended the Indians’ next possession after two plays. Benicia converted with Carr sweeping right from 29 yards out to make it 21-0 with 4 minutes, 4 seconds left in the first quarter.

Clayton Reza then picked off a Chauvin pass and returned it inside the Armijo 5, though offsetting penalties gave Benicia the ball at the Indians’ 35.

Didn’t matter. Carr took a swing pass and raced down left sideline for a touchdown on the next play to make it 28-0 with 51.6 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Indians more than held their own in the second quarter as they marched from their 20 to the Benicia 17 before a Chauvin pass deflected off a receiver’s hands and was picked off by Munakash.

Benicia scored in the third quarter on runs of 1 and 15 yards by Carr, who ran 16 times for 104 yards.

“We’ll get ‘em next week,” Toliver said. “We’ve got work to do. We’re not down, we’re not out.”

Next Friday Armijo is at Vanden, which plays Highland of Pocatello, Idaho, at Moscow, Idaho, today.
