FAIRFIELD — When you have almost as many rebounds as you do points, it’s probably going to be a good night.

Friday was a good one for the Armijo High girls basketball team as the Indians dominated both sides of the ball and cruised to a 63-21 Monticello Empire League victory over visiting Will C. Wood.

Armijo (17-6, 6-0 MEL) pulled down 55 rebounds to help fuel its offensive outburst — putting up 60 points in the first three quarters before putting on the brakes in the fourth.

Wood (13-10, 2-4 MEL), meanwhile, struggled to get anything going against the Indians’ smothering man-to-man defense and aggressive rebounding.

“We played great defense, I thought we really played good man-to-man team defense, which is what I like,” Armijo coach Christian Stoll said. “I thought we cleaned up our turnovers and I thought we shot the ball really well, we had a couple different girls hit a couple 3s.”

In all, the Indians hit six 3-pointers with four coming from Chloe Dawkins, who matched teammate Melaya Gaines for a game-high 18 points. Point guard Marshanique Hall added eight points.

Gaines also owned the glass with 15 rebounds, while Hall and Justice Robinson-Kroon had seven each.

“I though Melaya was absolutely awesome on the boards and she was going after them hard,” Stoll said. “It was a good team effort on both ends of the floor. I thought Marshanique did a good job of leading and Daija (Daniels) — with both Marshanique and Daija at the point getting everyone involved — great team effort.”

Armijo jumped out to a 25-3 lead after one quarter and held Wood to 3.8 percent (1 for 26) shooting from the floor in the first half.

The Wildcats didn’t get their first field goal until Reana Hardin’s running layup from the left side with 6:10 to play in the half.

Hardin led Wood with 11 points. Michelina Jordan added four points and led the team with seven rebounds.

“It was a tough night. Armijo’s a very good basketball team,” said Wildcats coach Bob Fernandez. “They played really, really well and, obviously, they made us play really bad.”

Wood didn’t turn the ball over a ton — 17 times to Armijo’s 15 — but the Indians limited them to just a handful of second-chance shots in the first three quarters and 25 total rebounds.

“We just didn’t have an answer for them tonight,” Fernandez said. “We couldn’t shoot the ball, we couldn’t stop them from scoring. We did a little better at times, but it’s just one of those nights. Like I told the girls, my favorite football team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. First game of the year they got blown out by the Ravens. Did they give up? No, they came back and played. So we’ve got to regroup, come back (to work) and play again, get better and look at winning the next games one at a time and see if we can’t get our way into the playoffs.”

Playoffs won’t be a problem for the Indians, provided they keep up their torrid pace.

In junior varsity action, Armijo won 54-20. Jada Williams led the Indians with 13 and Zelly Delgado added eight. Wood (1-20, 0-6) was led by Daijah Colvin with 11 points and 15 rebounds and Ashanti Randle 6.

Armijo visits Napa on Tuesday while Wood hosts Fairfield.
