Handful of local wrestlers move on to Sac-Joaquin Section Masters

MODESTO — The Rodriguez High wrestling team had four top-five finishers in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I-AA Championships, Saturday.

Emillio Gutierrez (162 pounds) and Brandon Vu (128) were the top finishers for the Mustangs as they went home with third place finishes.

Josh Wiess (172) and Jarrod Guinn (147) finished in fourth place, while Isreal Colozza (197) placed sixth and Brandon Diaz (154) finished seventh. Malachi Estep (140) finished in eighth – rounding out the Rodriguez wrestlers who qualified for the SJS Masters Championships at Stockton Arena starting Friday.

Although Armijo already has seven qualifiers for Masters, only three managed a top-five finish.

Jorge Perez (154, 4-1) was the Indians’ top finisher in third place, while Darius Levan (108, 4-2) was fourth and Houston Scibek (115, 4-2) was fifth.

Danny Charos (162, 3-2), Kris Elkin (222, 3-2), Amini Kapapa (172, 3-2)) and Billy Cimmino (184, 3-2) finished seventh for Armijo.

Vacaville took home the most first-place finishes at the tourney with six.

Jordan Aquino (108), Bobby Ehman (134), Hayden Fry (147), Quintin Cardoza (162), Steven Gomez (195) and Jeramy Sweany (220) finished in first place.

Second place finishers included Gionn Peralta (122), Anthony Hernandez (128), Eric Uldall (154) and Mike McCauley (285).

Other grapplers to move on to Masters include Alex Meyers (115), Matt Brazet (140) and Zach Meyers (184).

Two Vikings move on to Masters Championships

SACRAMENTO — Two Vanden High grapplers advanced to the SJS Masters Championships after Division II Championship wins, Saturday.

Brandon Dontogan (184) finished in second place, while Fernando Angulo (140) finished sixth.
