FAIRFIELD — The sweat of determination was flowing off the brow of Fairfield’s Alan Sanchez, Thursday.
Sanchez, 22, is set to get into the ring for his biggest fight yet when he faces former world champion Luis Collazo in San Antonio for the vacant WBA International Welterweight Title, Monday.
Riding a seven-match winning streak, Sanchez (12-2-1, 6 KOs) says he’s ready for his bout, which will air on Fox Sports 1 at 6 p.m.
“I’m excited for this and I can’t wait,” Sanchez said during an interview at JL Tepito Boxing Club in Fairfield. “This fight is more important because I’m fighting a former champion in Luis Collazo, and I’m very excited for that.”
One of Sanchez’s trainers, Jesse Lopez Sr., said he and Sanchez have a game plan.
“This guy likes to grab,” Lopez Sr. said. “Alan needs to move around and get away from him and throw punches. We’ve been training him hard. He’s in shape and he’s ready for a championship (fight). This is his big chance.
“(Collazo, 33-5. 17 KOs) is left handed, (Sanchez) needs to combine punch and knock him out. I want him to knock him out before six rounds.”
Lopez Sr. added that “We’ve fought on a lot of (TV). It’s another fight. He’s going up, up, up . Soon he’s have to fight for a championship. His opponent has fought a lot of champions.”
Sanchez weighed in on his mindset heading into this fight, too.
“(The training) has been good, like always,” said the lanky Fairfield High graduate with the wicked right cross. “I’ve been training hard, putting in some work. I think I’m younger and I feel like I’m faster than him. I’m going to be smarter in the ring.
“He has a lot of experience, but we are ready for that. We’re going to win.”
The trip to San Antonio will be Sanchez’s first, another thing he’s geared up for.
“I’m excited in getting to meet new people over there,” Sanchez said. “I just want to be the No. 1 welterweight. . . . and keep winning.”
And Monday will be another step in moving toward that goal.
