Brock Hekking was all over the stat sheet for the University of Nevada football team after its 31-9 thumping of Hawaii, even in areas you wouldn’t expect a defensive end to be.
And because of it, the Vacaville High graduate was named the Football Writers Association of America/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.
All Hekking did was make six tackles, 2 1/2 for loss, record three sacks, force two fumbles and intercept one pass while breaking up two others.
By being named player of the week, Hekking has been added to the 2013 Bronko Nagurski Award Watch List.
Not surprisingly, Hekking was also named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Damon Treat (Vanden) likewise filled up the stat sheet for St. Cloud State (3-0) in a 34-3 thumping of Concordia-St. Paul. The former Viking caught seven passes for 66 yards, including a 21-yard TD in the second quarter, rushed three times for 19 yards, returned two punts for 59 yards, with a long of 41, and ran back a kickoff 47 yards.
Pacific (3-0) topped Menlo 28-21 to give the Boxers their best start since 1994. Craig Bailey (Fairfield) helped their cause by making four tackles, three of them solo.
Basil Bandy (Rodriguez) recorded two tackles for Fort Hays State (0-3) in a 49-14 loss to Northwest Missouri State.
Humboldt State (0-3) fell 28-2 to Azusa Pacific with Christian Basden (Vanden) catching two passes for 14 yards.
Sacramento State (1-3) dropped a 24-21 heartbreaker to Southern Utah (3-1) in overtime, giving up the tying touchdown and tying 2-point conversion with 31 seconds left in regulation. Markell Williams (Vacaville) had six tackles and Chris Broadnax (Vanden) played for the Hornets, while Myles Carelock (Vanden, Rodriguez) had two tackles for the Thunderbirds.
Deone Bucannon (Vanden) intercepted a pass for Washington State (3-1) to set up the first touchdown of the game and also had five tackles and forced a fumble in a 42-0 blanking of Idaho.
In Dixie State’s 51-32 loss to Western Oregon, Myles Burton (Rodriguez) rushed six times for 28 yards, including a 4-yard TD run for the last score of the game for the Red Storm (0-3).
Keith Welch Jr. (Fairfield) accounted for all of Lewis and Clark’s scoring, throwing for 293 yards and five touchdowns as the Pios (0-3) lost 63-34 to Wisconsin-Platteville. Welch completed 20 of 37 passes and also ran 12 times for 45 yards.
Greg Goodenough also saw action for the Pios.
Fresno State earned its second one-point victory of the season by edging Boise State 41-40. Marcel Jensen (Rodriguez) caught three passes for 39 yards for the Bulldogs (3-0).
Colorado State (1-3) fell 31-6 to top-ranked Alabama with LaRyan King (Vacaville) seeing action for the Rams.
Andre Lewis (Rodriguez) played for Utah (3-1) in a 20-13 win over rival Brigham Young.
Southern Oregon flattened Eastern Oregon 73-20 with Melvin Mason (Vacaville running for 13 yards on two carries and Ammir Souder (Armijo) recording four tackles for the Raiders.
Cameron Richmond (Rodriguez) was limited to five catches for 16 yards by Washington as Idaho State (2-1) was crushed 56-0.
Jordan Morrow (Rodriguez) saw the field for Murray State (2-2) in a 48-7 loss to Bowling Green.
Keith Williams (Fairfield) played for San Diego in a 42-20 loss to Harvard.
UC Davis earned its first win over California since 1976, stunning the Golden Bears 12-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. Devon Damelio (Rodriguez) had 11 kills, two assists, two aces, eight digs and five block assists in the win. The Aggies (8-5) also topped Cal State Bakersfield 3-1 with Damelio getting six kills, three assists, one ace, 14 digs and five block assists.
Simpson (3-8) split its two matches for the week, sweeping Walla Walla 3-0 before being blanked by La Sierra 3-0. Jazmin Wallace (Fairfield) had one assist and seven digs in the former, one assist and 10 digs in the latter.
Lainey Brown (Vacaville Christian, Solano) had six digs to help Menlo (6-4) escape with a 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 20-15, 15-13 win over La Sierra. The Oaks also fell 3-1 to UC Santa Cruz with Brown getting four digs.
Holy Names lost to UC Santa Cruz 3-0, Dixie State 3-1 and Point Loma 3-0 with Tatum Bales (Wood, Solano) amassing two kills, seven assists, two aces and 61 digs over the three matches.
Erica Ramirez (Armijo, Solano) had two saves in goal while playing the first half for Columbia College (5-1-1) in a 7-0 shutout of Benedictine-Springfield.
Barbara Bakh (Solano) played for University of Mary (1-4-1) in a 2-0 loss to Montana State-Billings.
Darian Corey (Rodriguez) took two shots, one of them on goal, in Humboldt State’s 1-0 loss to Cal State East Bay in double overtime. She also played as the Lumberjacks (3-3) fell 2-1 to Cal State Stanislaus.
Cecilee Kidd (Fairfield, Solano) saw action for Missouri Valley (6-1-1) in a 1-0 edging of Williams Woods.
Sandy Garcia (Solano) took two shots on goal for Nyack in a 1-0 loss to Georgian Court. Alexsa Gonzalez (Solano) also played with the two Falcons also seeing action for the Warriors (2-3) in a 4-2 win over Dominican College of Orangeburg, N.Y.
Katie Gomez (Vacaville) finished 43rd for Dominican of San Rafael in the Sonoma State Invitational at Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa, crossing in 28 minutes, 23.13 seconds.
